What kind of dance music are we most likely to hear on the Sun Princesss? We just started ballroom dance lessons so we can hopefully hold our own on the dance floor when we cruise to Alaska in May. They asked what kind of music we should prepare for.
MV Sun Princess offers several styles of dance music.
>> The Vista Lounge usually has a half hour of dancing before each show, with "big band" style music (mostly foxtrot, waltz, and swing, with perhaps a rhumba or a cha-cha mixed in) before each show. The band there is the show band, and it usually is very good.
>> The Wheelhouse Bar has two combos that play dance music, nominally from 5:00 PM until 1:00 AM each evening, with a possible interruption for a special party on one or two evenings of the cruise. In my experience, one of these bands usually is outstanding and the oher ranges from tolerable to very good if you like ballroom dancing.
>> The disco cranks up at 11:00 PM or so and has a DJ playing dance music "into the wee hours" so long as folks are there. Some disco beats actually work for cha-cha, mambo, and merengue, and some of the DJ's actually do shift to other styles (50's rock & roll is good for swing, etc.) which you might prefer.
This ship originally also had live music on the Horizon Court from 9:00 PM until 1:00 AM, which might or mght not have been suitable for dancing, but that seems to have fallen casualty to the company's "cost reduction programme" and perhaps also to complaints from both passengers dining there and deck officers (whose quarters are directly below the Horizon Court).
