Compliments of Cruise News Daily

* The major event of the last week was the christening of
Coral Princess. The ceremony was unique in that it was
both the first time a ship has been christened while in
motion and the first time a ship has been christened in
the Panama Canal. Princess chose the location to
highlight their longstanding relationship with Panama,
and Her Excellency Mireya Moscoso, the president of
Panama was asked to be Coral Princess' godmother.
Because Coral Princess designed to be a size that just
barely fits through the canal (less than six inches
clearance on each side), there wasn't room for the
apparatus which would hold the bottle of champagne, to be
constructed on the side of the ship, so the ceremony was
held in a small area of Deck 16, and the bottle was
broken against the ship's mast.
CND took readers behind the scenes to the reception
and formal luncheon for the godmother, and we saw a
bottle that didn't want to be broken, a godmother who
liked to shop and a pastry chef who didn't check his
spelling. The ceremony, wasn't a cheap one for Princess,
by the way. Coral Princess paid a record $217,513.75 for
passage thru the Gatun Locks.
While CND was aboard Coral Princess for the
christening cruise, we also told readers about the new
features on the 88,000-ton ship. Coral Princess moves
Princess back to a size of ship which can transit the
Panama Canal, better suited for their mix of destinations
which shift seasonally between both coasts of the US.
Even though this class of ship is smaller than the Grand
Princess series, it has more public space available. It
moves the major public rooms to two decks, and thanks to
the new forward placement of the galleys, there is better
traffic flow through the ship, especially to the main
dining rooms.
The Bayou Cafe, a new Cajun/Creole alternative
restaurant makes its debut on Coral Princess. While
dinner there was good, and worth the $10 surcharge (which
also includes a cocktail), Princess is still tinkering
with the menu and entertainment to find what exactly
works best for the passengers. A new '60's-style piano
bar, Crooners, which specializes in martinis, also makes
its debut just off the atrium.
Another new concept rolled out is Scholarship@Sea.
It's hard to describe, because it sounds like just
another enrichment program, but the difference is the
high-tech Universe Lounge which is where most of the
programs are presented. Because of the large projection
screens, cameras for close-ups and the extensive
facilities, it brings the audience and the presenters
close together in a way not possible in other large-venue
enrichment programs. The topics range from cooking
demonstrations and photography workshops, to computer and
finance classes, and even to special types of lectures
such as those by noted crime-solvers. Another part of S@S
is another first for Coral Princess. Ceramics is one of
the courses offered and it includes the first kiln at
sea.

If the ship had 1950 passengers, the amount from each of the passenger's fare was $111.54 for transitting the Panama Canal.
