Default Xel Ha at Cozumel

My boyfriend and I will be going on the Grand Princess on March 30. I have done some research on the ports we are going to, and come across Xel Ha Park at Cozumel.

We would like to go there on our own, since the excursion Princess offer is too expensive ($100+), does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should do?
Is Xel Ha far from where Grand Princess' port is?
How much is taxi fare to/ from the port and Xel Ha and is it safe to do this on our own?
How much is admission at Xel Ha and it is a better deal to go on our own?

Any suggestions will be much apprepicated!!!

Xel-Ha is actually on the mainland of Mexico. You would need to ferry to the mainland from Cozumel, then take a cab or bus down the coast to Xel-Ha. Not very practical to do on your own.
I was there a couple of years ago. Our tour was to Tulum ( Mayan site) with a couple of hours thrown in at Xel-ha. Again, I don't think this would be practical for you to do on your own due to time and distance.
