Island Princess Aug 9 To Alaska First Timer with Questions

This will be our first cruise and are heading to Alaska May 9th
for a 7 day cruise on the Island Princes to celebrate our 20th.
Fingers crossed that she'll be ready. I've been reading the last
8 months worth of postings for some cruise Tips and Tricks and to
get a general feel for what to expect.

But I have some questions. Any help on any or all will be greatly appreciated.
I am assuming the experiences on the Coral will be the same for the Island.

1. Not Clear on Formal evenings. Can I wear Dockers and Polo shirt in the PC
dining rooms on those evening?

2. I have a guaranteed AE Mini-Suite. Any one with experience with that?
Pros/Cons? Our TA said it was a good deal but why?

3. I've read many versions and angles on bring alcohol aboard. Seems like the
Consensus is that Wine and Water are Ok, Beer and liquor aren't but try anyway
by putting it in checked baggage. Any opinions on that?

4. My wife loves glaciers. Anyone with experiences in Fly in Glacier tours
in Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan? Would love to hear about it.

Are you sure about your dates? I don't think the first sailing of the Island Princess is until July 03.

We're on the IP July 26 from Vancouver to Seward . . . our first cruise, too.

Have a great trip,
Sandy

We will also be on the same sailing of the Island Princess - Aug. 9. Our friends are getting married on the cruise. This will be the first cruise also for my husband and me. We also got the same deal on the guaranteed AE mini suite. I am glad you asked those questions because I am also very curious about the them. Hope you get some good answers! See you on the ship.

Hope this helps...

1. Not Clear on Formal evenings. Can I wear Dockers and Polo shirt in the PC
dining rooms on those evening?

No, just because you chose PC for dining (my favorite I might add), you still are expected to dress in formal attire. Basically, it just means that you do not have an assigned time to eat.

2. I have a guaranteed AE Mini-Suite. Any one with experience with that?
Pros/Cons? Our TA said it was a good deal but why?

Great deal, it means that you are guaranteed to get at least an AE mini-suite, but there is always a chance of an upgrade. The Mini suite is nice because you have a little (and I mean little) sitting area, as well as a balcony. For Alaska, you will want this because you will be cruising through places, and will want to sit outside and watch. This means you can sit outside in your robe and enjoy breakfast while cruising.

3. I've read many versions and angles on bring alcohol aboard. Seems like the
Consensus is that Wine and Water are Ok, Beer and liquor aren't but try anyway
by putting it in checked baggage. Any opinions on that?

We always bring beer, soda and wine in our checked luggage, and have never had a problem (I would suggest making sure it is in something that won't get it on your clothes if it leaks). Go for it!

4. My wife loves glaciers. Anyone with experiences in Fly in Glacier tours
in Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan? Would love to hear about it.

Sorry, too scared to do this, maybe someone else will post.

Regarding beer, if you like micro-brew type beer pick up a couple of 6-packs of Alaskan Pale Ale (it has a bear on the label) some of the best beer. You will Alaska, alot to see. Make sure you bring along "Layering clothes". By the afternoon you could be in shorts & t-shirts but when you get off the ship you'll be in sweats, coats, etc. The weather is quite unpredicatble.

We've been on a variety of cruises, and Alaska had the most wonderful scenerey. Going back to Alaska next year for another cruise.

Enjoy.

Maybe if you're an Eskimo. It will be pretty cool in the glacier areas, in fact so cold that we froze with heavy coats and sweaters on.

Thanks all for the Info. Very helpfull!!

We want to do a walk on Glacier and are wondering if anyone enjoyed one over another. We are thinking of booking a fly on to Mendenhall in Juneau
just to say we walked on one. Is there another way to get on a Glacier other than flying on? Any recomendations on the most senic?

Again, thanks for all the great info.

Regarding fly in glacier tours:
While in Juneau try a ERA Helicopter tour. Not only do you get to fly over the glaciers but also spend time walking on one. It was one of the highlights of our first trip to Alaska.
