Default Caribbean Princess

We were on the April 24th Caribbean Princess. This was our 19th cruise, using different lines, and was the worst cruise yet. It took most of the week to fix the ac in the room and the toilet smelled. The buffet waiters watched an elderly man try to find a seat with a plate in his hand, with no attemp to help. The deck boy denied having any cushions until a passenger told him where they were. We were guarenteed late seating, but were told we had to do personal preference because although garenteed thare were no tables. HUH? Finally we got a table. Entertainment was awful. At least there was no trouble getting a seat in the show room. First time cruisers were happy. Any repeat cruisers were horrified by the poorly trained and poorly supervised staff with a bad attitude. Lines were everywhere. The shopping on board was too crowded to bother with. Bar tenders constantly changed and drinks varied from wonderful, to throw out level. They nickel and dimed for everything. Not even a pen in the room! You could buy one in the crowded shopping area. The good news was the Movies Under the Stars, the stability of the ship, and the handling of the tendors getting to Princess Kays. I'm not sure if we'll cruise Princess again, but , if we do, it will be a smaller ship. We want elegance and personal service. I'm not sure this is possible anymore on Princess.

I've never cruised Princess, so I have no previous experience. Just so you know, I'm planning on a Diamond Princess cruise in November 2005. Since I made my decision I've been checking out many boards for reviews of the ship, and frankly, most of them have been pretty bad for Diamond and Caribbean. However, I'm going to monitor the reviews since these are new ships. I'm going to asume (for now) that the problem is that Princess debuted three ships in such short order. Hopefully things will get better as the crew learns the ships and corrections are made. I think Princess has been around long enough and has a good enough reputation to give them a chance to fix things.

Agreed totally you my friend.
Cab. Princess was my 4th cruise coming from Carnival, were were disappointed with Cab. Prin. but trying our best our vacation anyway. We were on the 1st sailing date
4/3 to 4/10...Our cabin was very nice with larger balcony than expected
Other than the ship being very new and fancy otherwise operations & programs were suck. I agreed with you that they nickles and dimes passengers on every things even frozen ice cream for the kids.
Fortunately our dining experience was not as bad as yours but I heard from other passengers that they had to find their to the dining room every night due the Personal Choice (BAD BAD BAD). We did not have any trouble with staffs but noticed that CAb Prin could use more staffs. Staffs were very freindly
Beautiful children center but they dont open long enough for th ekids to enjoy them.
Their buffet restaurrants were suck, Carnival & RCL did much better job.
the show room and itsa nightly programs suck, they dancers broke the stage after first show and cancel every thing else after.
We bought the coke card for kids to find out that we were wasting money. Beacuse it took so long to get in line to get free any drink. Specially they did not pay attention to kids with Coke card...

I am going on the Caribbean Princess in July. Have sailed RC 2 years ago and Princess last year. Had a great time on both...although they were both very different. In RC took my kids (teens) and they loved it...went on Princess with 4 adults (I knew ahead of time you pay for iceream).. other then that no complaints. Staff was nice, shows were good, food enjoyable and plenty, and rooms were much bigger then RC. This year we are traveling Princess with 9 people ages 15 to 51 and hoping to have as good as time as last year.

I think one should be just happy to be able to go cruising. Most folks can not find the money to do this. So there is a line..big deal. If you go on a ship that has over what 3000 people on it what do you expect? The non working A/C would have bothered me since I need it cool but maybe you could have asked them for a different cabin.
Write a letter to them and see what will happen. I am personally looking forward to our next cruise and I am determined to make the best out of it. Life is too short..be happy!

I find it hard to believe it was THAT bad. I have cruised on Princess 20 times and never had a bad expeience! I know a # of people that are very well traveled/cruisers, who were on that sailing. They certainly didn't have the bad experience as the post above. I did warn them to wait a little longer. New ships have kink's....wait a couple months. They went and had a great time with minor complaints. We are booked n the Cari. Princess for Thanksgiving week and can't wait!
Happy sailing,
Sea Angel

My husband & I were on the 4/24 CP cruise. Looks like we were on a different one from Karpear, based on his/her opinion. We had great weather, great fun, great meals. No toilet smells, drinks were very good (esp the Bahama Mama)! Some of the entertainment was better than others. Bottomline...if you go expecting perfection you will be disappointed. If you take a CP cruise with a laid back "go with the flow" type attitude, you should have a good time. It's all what you make of it.

We have been on 3 Princess Cruises so far, and are booked on the Caribbean Princess for Sept.18-25.We saw her come back into port in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday morning at 5:15AM and she was beautiful. We stayed and watched her dock.I have to agree that we haven't had a bad cruise yet and can't imagine that things were as bad as stated. We even had a good time when we had an inside room on the Grand. I remember the reviews last year on a ship from another line about sewer smells, etc. Didn't detect a thing! I believe, also, that a cruise is what you make it and you can have a good time in spite of yourself. My husband was carrying on about the "nickel-dime" stuff the last time we were on .You know what? We're sailing Princess again because we enjoyed the entire cruise as a whole. We don't have young children so that could have been an issue, but on other Princess cruises, the kids we saw with their parents at dinner were anxious to get back to their area because they were having fun and finishing projects. I'm looking forward to my cruise. I think, too, that for the first several months, with new crews aboard, one has to give them the benefit of the doubt. I think that holds true for all cruise lines. Let me clarify. We have wonderful times no matter where we are. The point is that this ship, and hopefully not all Princess ships, needs to have a star dropped from the ratings.

I'm encouraged to hear that you do have a good time on your cruises. I truly hope that this was just a case of first month indoctrination.I know it's hard to tell a book by its cover, but her cover is just so pretty, judging from what we saw when she arrived in port yesterday morning.I'm hoping to hear from some cruisers who are on her this week. They have my name,so I hope to have them check into one of the boards and give their reaction and experiences so that the rest of us going can see what's in store for us. It's tough to anticipate a cruise for so long and then be really disappointed.I think that's what happened in your case. Let's cross our fingers that the problems are fixed. Lynne

No doubt that you all will have a nice time there. Don't set your expectation too high.
In order to have a good time on a cruise is to participate and be flexible.
My previous message meant to give the audiance a full range of things to beware of.

we did have agood time. DONT FORGET TO MAKE FRIEND WITH THE BATENDER IN THE BACK OF THE SHIP AT NEAR THE HOT TUB AND BABY POOL. THAT WAS TH E PERFECT PLACE US TO RELAX AND LOTS DRINKS..HIS NAME IS MERLIN.

Sorry folks have to agree with Karpear on most points. We just got back and the food was awful in the dining room the wait was even worse. We ate in Cafe Carib most nights. And there was a bad smell in the aft where unfortunatly we were! Our room was great a minisuite Our balcony was where we hung out most of the afternoons. There were no seats in the burger/pizza area Passengers were standing up to eat.

Is the Caribe Cafe the new Horizon Deck? I guess we need to check out the cruise site again. Haven't been on there in awhile. At first it was so hard to get information that we haven't been back there. I think I'm missing out on a lot of information. Thanks for all your reports. Will check things out at the Princess site again. Lynne

From our experience on a different ship last year with a reported smell, we've decided that it could have been an isolated incident. We went aboard "looking for" the smell and couldn't find one.Sometimes a passenger might wander into an area of an exhaust fan or vent and pick up something. By the time you cruise, the problem will probably have been corrected. I wouldn't jump ship just yet-only if there are several overwhelming reports of such a problem in the same area should it be "considered". We've been on 3 other Princess cruises and never encountered a bad smell. Alisar, did you have that bad smell the entire time? Glad your mini-suite and balcony were great. I agree that a good balcony on a nice sunny day or a warm balmy evening can make a cruise special!
Lynne (We had an aft balcony on the other ship and reportedly that's where the smell was supposed to be-maybe the exhaust fans are back there up on the top deck somewhere),

The bad smell was there for the entire week but we only noticed it aft. It was in our room only once,we must have had the door open. We would have jumped ship if it wernt for the balcony!!

I will have my first sail on June 19 wtih CP, to celebrate my 25 th anniversary. I picked CP, instead of others, because it is a new ship. By reading the cruise reviews and message boards, I doubt if I have made a mistake already.

Gee, that wasn't good! I'm sorry that the smell picked your cabin to come into! Hopefully, the problem was corrected by the time the next person occupied that cabin.I don't think we'll ever sail aft again, either, for different reasons. We'll probably stick to the middle somewhere. By June 19, perhaps everything will be in better order one would think. It will be interesting to hear further reports. Lynne

WE are sailing 6/26/04. This is our second cruise for my wife and me first for my 17year old daughter and 13 year old son. This will probably be our last family vacation. Our daughter will be a senior in high school in September and right now it's next to impossible to get her to do anything with us and I'm sure with college ahead this cruise is it for a real family vacation. Will she have a good time and does any body recommend anything we should do as a family (other then eat) that we would enjoy aboard the ship?

John G. I know your pain about your teenage daughter. I know how it was with my son when he left to attend the Air Force Academy..I cried more than his mother did. Just enjoy your family..don't try to "force" any family interactions, just flow with it. About 10 years down the road your daughter will surprise you by saying.."hey Dad, remember when we went on that cruise before I went to college...well, I didn't tell you then but I had a really great time just being with my family"..it happens just be glad you have your family intact and enjoy the cruise (and pray there aren't a bunch of 17 year old boys on board (smile)

Were you on the same ship as the rest of us ? We sailed the CP on 4/17 and had a great time. Everything is new and beautiful ,what's not to like ?

Food was great especially at the 2 Speciality restaurants . We made dinner resevations on saturday for the week and never waited more than 5 minutes for a table.

Entertainment was varied and enjoyable, something for everyone.

Maybe i just see the glass as half full ?

I really like your message. We are probably not in the mainstream of cruisers-kind of stick to ourselves and do selective activities that we like-casino,shows,library,general excursions-mainly relaxing.Although we've had some exasperating moments at times, I can't say that they were bad. We're really looking forward to our cruise Sept.18-25.We saw her arrive at Port Everglades on May 8 and took some shots of her. While they didn't turn out as well as expected,we have a daylight shot of her docked at the Terminal that is now on our desktop. We'll be looking at her everyday anticipation! We'll await your report, ThomP.There is a friend of a fellow Sept.18 cruiser aboard this week, and we're waiting for his reaction, too! Lynne

We were on the 5/1 sailing of the Caribbean Princess and we had a great time. None of the problems mentioned above. The food was wonderful, service great, and most of the entertainment was good. I think some people are overly picky and just can't be pleased. Normal people will have a great time.

Just a note to John G. - We took our daughter and son in 2000 on the Voyager of the Seas, they were 17 and 12. They loved the entire experience. Don't worry about what they will do - just have fun being together. Our kids even enjoyed getting dressed up for dinner. We thought it was our last vacation together also. Somehow we ended up on the Grand this past march with our 21 year old daughter and 17 year old son!!!!!
Again, we had a wonderful time. My husband and I are trying to figure out how we can 'sneak' a cruise in by ourselves now!!!!
Have a great trip!

This is so funny to read. I went on the first sailing of the CP and found that their were many problems. That did not mean that I did not love the cruise and have a great time, it was just that I missed some of the things that I thought happened on cruises. Many of the people who had cruised before said that the sailing had many problems and they would not do a first sailing again. I don't think I would either. A couple of things I noticed. I was looking forward to a midnight buffet and all they had was a cafe caribe which served a bistro menu. I don't know about you but I didn't want to sit down and be served at midnight, I want to get a small snack and leave and you couldnt do that. 2. The stage was broke and only one broadway like show was performed...I was one of the lucky ones and actually saw the show....it was promised to come back and never did. 3. We had a problem with an overflowing toliet, I called and then left the room. When I came back in 2 or 3 hours later, thank goodness I looked down because there was a man under my sink...he didn't say anything or have anything posted on the door. I think that is a bit creepy, I could have been alone in a room with a stranger and not even know it, or I could have come in got ready to take a shower and bam I am naked in front of this guy...that is not even something funny to think about it is creepy. 4. The food sucked in the buffet during the day. 5. No mint on my pillow the first 3 nights? Hello? Isn't that standard?

With all the above I did have a great time and would have stayed in the same cabin with the same service if they would have let me for another week, just that when you are putting out alot of money for something you want to have what you paid for. So when people complain just think, I am glad that didn't happen to me. Since this was my first cruise I looked at these boards to find out what to expect and even the complaints helped me out.
