There are way too many great tours- look over the list and narrow down your interests. Budget fully- you get only half a trip without them. Myself, I never take ship tours and always go independent- supurb local venders in Alaska.

In Juneau, the Mt. Roberts Tramway is very good. Your admission ticket is valid all day which is great for viewing the city at night. I know most HAL ships don't depart until 11pm. Lots of good hiking trails and the Red Dog Saloon is a must see. We went in August last year and the weather in Juneau was great ,in the high 70's. Drizzled all day In Ketchikan so didn't do much except to walk Creek Street. Rode the WhitePass train in Skagway, expensive but some commanding views and a real eye opener on what the gold miners went through. Most stores stay open until the ships depart. Have fun!

We traveled to Alaska on the Dawn July 2002, you'll have a great time. In Ketchikcan you dock right in town. So we opted to walk the town on our own. We found our way around quite easily. It rains alot here so be prepared. In Juneau we did the Mendenhall Glacier/ hatchery tour and the flightseeing tour to Taku glacier. Both very good. The flightseeing tour was a little pricey, but well worth it. A black bear showed up to the salmon bake, quite entertaining. In Skagway we did the all day tour on the train and bus to the Yukon. Looking back, we would do a shorter tour in Skagway. Again you dock very close to town and it is an easy walk, but because of the long tour we missed out on the town. We're going back the end of July and plan to do different tours this time. Have a great time. hint..it did rain off and on every day of our cruise, so pack a light rain jacket and you'll be fine.
