We are coming from Scotland and have been allocated a room at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver. Is this near the cruise Terminal? Is it nice? Also should we get some Canadian dollars or plan to use US dollars and/or credit cards?
We may be pretty shattered/jet lagged after travelling and wish to just laze about the hotel. Seems a bit of a shame though to waste time sleeping. If you had one night in Vancouver what would YOU do with the time? We arrive about teatime.
We stayed at Sutton Place and it is a very nice hotel. I would describe it as small, luxurious and formal. You might also look at the Waterfront Centre Hotel which is right across from the ship terminal. It's a wonderful hotel and if you have a harbor view you can see your ship pull into the terminal in the AM
If you have time, and it's a nice day, see if you can get an excursion that takes you to the top of Grouse Mountain. On a clear day you can see for ever. When I lived in Vancouver I would go to a lookout about half way up to help put things into a perspective that was easier to handle. The view is awsome! The Pan Pacific hotel is magnificent and right on the water. Also if you have time, see if you can get to a restaurant called "Salmon House On The Hill". It is situated on Grouse Mountain, not at the top, but at night you get a wonderful view of Vancouver lights.
Being a Canadian I would advise getting a few Canadian dollars , you can use U.S. dollars but you will get a better rate of exchange at your bank or currency exchange. 1 U.S. dollar = 1.30-1.35 Cdn. Of course for meals and shopping you can use a credit card but you will need some money for tips, and small misc. purchases.
