PC access on Grand Princess
I'm cruising from Galveston in a month on Grand Princess. Worried as I have a term paper that has to be submitted for review, then I''ll get it back on thecruise and need to edit and resubmit from the ship. I can't turn it in in advance. I've been on a couple of cruises (RCL) and the PC time was very expensive. How reliable are the internet connections? Does the 'internet cafe' mean I can use my laptop and get on the internet? I'm considering cancelling the cruise because I can't deal with not getting this paper submitted. If I felt certain that I could ABSOLUTELY use my laptop to do the revisions and then copy the file to a ship PC for upload, I'd feel a lot better.

Re: PC access on Grand Princess
Well, you SHOULD have no problems. Just got off the Grand last week and there were several computers that just would not give you the dial up connection even though you were being charged for it. Those problems continued all week. Be sure to visit the purser to get those unusable computer charges refunded. We did so as well as quite a few others. The charge is .35/minute. When I sailed Princess Alaska we lost the connection completely for a few days, but I'm sure there is some place you would be able to find access at one of your ports. I'm pretty sure you can bring your lap top, hopefully someone will answer that portion for you. I'm not certain. I wouldn't cancel, but do make sure where you can gain internet access while on land in port just in case.

You should be able to gain access onboard, but if not, each of the ports has internet cafes you can spend time in. They are much cheaper than on ship too. If there is a port you aren't exactly interested in, this might be the perfect opportunity to do the work. Sorry your vacation can't be one of complete ralaxation. I'd hate for you (or anyone) to have to cancel, but I do know the first several sailings of the Grand out of Galveston are sold out so if you do, someone will be happy to take your spot.

I'd suggest looking for an internet cafe in one of your ports, they are usually close to the pier and you can use them for an hour for around $5 and its a fast connection.

Re: Re: PC access on Grand Princess
You didn't say, but if you are platnum status (usualy five or more Princess cruises puts you in this category) you get PC free. It is added to yoour bill, then deducted. I had no problem getting the net, but I couldn't download my digital photos to CDs. the ships photography staff will do this....for a price. (This was on the Grand)

Re: PC access on Grand Princess
You're right to a point Jimeeeee4. Platinum gets free access at the internet cafe, but not free "hot spot" access. ie; your own laptop. I know for a fact that on the Caribbean Princess the entire atrium is a "hot spot" where your lap top will link up, but you have to buy a card for a minimum of $10 with a code that allows you to actually link up. Good luck with your cruise.
