costa maya beach

The Grand will be in port at Majahual (Costa Maya Beach). Is there nice beach close by for snorkeling and sunning without taking an excursion? We would like to be away from huge crowds, but not so far away from the ship to risk "missing the boat" at the end of the day! Thanks for your help!

I'd also like to know if their are any hammock areas on a beach to lounge around in. Thanks!

I have not been yet so I can't vouch for anything, but we are going on our Nov 7 cruise. I have done alot of research and have found that Majahual Beach is said to be a very nice beach and you can take a taxi there.

Hope this helps. I will post a review of all my ports so look for it if you are cruising after Nov 14.

Karen, I too have been researching and have come to terms with missing GC and Princess Cays. Costa Maya looks great. I am hoping to parasail. I feel your excitement, we are getting so close!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes on your wedding at the end of the month. Hope all goes well!

P.S. I thought Brian was planning the honeymoon;) If he's anything like my DH, he's just planning to get in the car when I say it's time to get to the airport. (LOL).

HAHA Deedi .. I think this is just a precursor of what I am in for. He comes up with the "great idea" and I make it happen. I have shown him all the places I have found and he has said "yea honey that looks great" <eyeroll> Oh well, I love planning things. If I hadn't already gotten a degree in my field I would have been a wedding planner or some type of event planner. I will send you the link to the photographer when he posts all of our pictures on his website so you can look at them .. if you want.

Parasailing! COOL!! We were looking into renting a moped type thing but was told by a local event person there that it would not be safe for us to do that since all of the drivers there think they are NASCAR drivers HAHA

I just noticed that I used eyeroll twice today .. can you tell I work and live with teenagers!!

Re: costa maya beach

We were there last month (unscheduled due to an itinerary change). On arrival it just looks like jungle and a bit scary but we actually had a fab time. There's a modern purpose built shopping complex just as you get off the ship. It has all the usual Mexican fare and is just like Cozumel but on a much smaller scale. As it is such a tiny place they seem more keen to barter there than anywhere we've been before. My $85 dollar dress ended up $30 dollars....thought I was probably still ripped off! There's also a swimming pool and bar there.

We took a taxi for $3 dollars along to the main beach at Mahjuhal. Its very 'rustic'. There's one street lined with vendors and the beach is right there. There are bar 'tents' along the beach and the Pina Coladas are the best I've tasted and cheap. The sand is lovely and the water turqoise and you can get some great photos of the ship sitting in the turqoise waters (like the ones you've probably seen on the message boards for the private islands that you thought you were going to miss). As it is so 'rustic' and uncommercialised there's not a lot of facilities but we found a palm tree next to a masseuse and had a lovely afternoon. As there is only a long thin strip of beach, it means you are really close to the water so if you are with friends you can all go in the water together and still be close to your things. Take advantage of the masseuses. It's absolute heaven. It costs $20 for half an hour and worth every penny and more. She massaged my whole body including fingers, toes, earlobes and head. No need for fancy music, your head is facing the water with the waves lapping up. It';s heaven and was far better value than my $115 spa treatment on board the ship.

Regarding the beach massages - is it a first come first served situation or is there a means by which one coudl book them prior to the day in port?

On our 1/04 Grand Princess cruise, we went to Majahual Beach expecting great snorkeling, and white, sandy beaches. The beach was completely FILTHY. You could not look in any direction without seeing tar, beer bottles, and random trash strewn EVERYWHERE. The water was so murky looking that we were afraid to go in. My DH attempted to go snorkeling, but he said he couldn't see any further than 2 feet in front of him. Every single lounge chair on the beach was broken and filthy. Go snorkeling in Grand Cayman or Cozumel, instead. You won't be sorry. :)

We were in Mahahual in April 2004 and the beach was very nice. White sand and turquoise water. There were beach chairs and I beleive some hammocks, but I'm not sure on the hammocks.

Cracks me up how people see things so differently! We are going to attempt the beaches, if they are nice we will stay, if they aren't then we will get the taxi man back and zoom zoom off to the next one. I'm sure they have more than one beach there.

I wouldn't know how you would begin to book a massage there given it's not a formal company or anything. There are however several beds along the beach and you just ask when you are there. I didn't have to wait at all and just watched when she was finished the last one.

Have fun!

Sounds good on the massages - We'll be heading that way!
Were they only offering half hour massages?
