personal choice dining
I am worried I have heard from 2 friends who have returned from a Grand Princess cruise and said dining was a nightmare --long lines ---long waits-- is that true ???

I've been on the Diamond twice and the Star and never had long lines, etc for personal choice dining. Large groups have a harder time with it because of a lack of large tables.

Re: personal choice dining
I hate to give away my secret but if there are 2 dining rooms go to the one that is on the lowest deck. People stop at the first one and that's why the lines are long. The other one probably runs about 3/4 full the entire time.

Aw, CJH, why'd you give away our secret??? We never had any problem being seated immediately, probably because we asked to sit with others. Those who wanted a table for two, or were a large party, were given pagers and had to wait. We loved Personal Choice!

Re: Re: personal choice dining
When we were on the Grand Princess on a trans-Atlantic cruise a few months ago, we had to use personal choices on a few occasions when we came in late from a tour. The dining room was too frantic, and we didn't find the service as good as in the traditional dining room.

We decided that we will not book any cruise where we can't get traditional dining.

you can make reservations - problem solved.

Re: Re: personal choice dining
I agree Lisa, but that is one more reason that I would not choose personal choice dining. I want to relax on a cruise and not be bothered with things like reservations.

Re: personal choice dining
jbprincess - you can change your dining choice from Anytime to Traditional -if there is space available - do it now. Traditional dining fills up very fast. If you are concerned about long-waits and lines. No such thing in Traditional dining. You arrive when the dining room opens, you are escorted to your assigned table the first night, you meet your waitstaff. You dine at the same time every night, same table, same waitstaff - personal attention - your waitstaff gets to know your likes and dislikes will make recommendations accordingly. You won't even have to ask for your cocktail. Your waiter will ask you would you like your " Absolute & Tonic with a twist of lemon tonight"??
If you try traditional dining and find that its not to your liking you can always switch to Anytime Dining, all you do is tell the Maitre D.

Re: personal choice dining
Had personal choice dining on the Golden Princess Jan 2, 05 and enjoyed it very much. One of the keys is to try to make reservations. We didn't every day and had no trouble. One evening we had reservations and showed up and recognized the head waiter from our cruise in May on the Royal Princess. When I asked if we could get reservations for the next evening, he said it wasn't needed, to just show and he'd get us a table. Well we did and within 2 minutes were seated. We chose to eat around 7:30 each evening.
