Default Sun Princess

My wife and I cruised recently on the Sun Princess for 10 days and it will be our last cruise on the Sun! And after writing Princess Cruises twice about the cruise and missing cruise credits for that matter the last time on Princess for some time to come.

People's description of oily subbstances in the toilet, sewer smell on several decks, broken tiles in bathrooms and public area's and lousy dining room service are all true!
Everything described and then some were on our cruise. Have cruised Princess for over 10 years on many Princess vessels but this one and the cruise ports were the worst. But with the economy recovering, cruising right now is hot! So it shouldnt surprise anyone that cruise companies will deny any negative opinion on any ship. But lets remember this is one person's opinion. You can have 10 people who will say just the opposite.

We typically spend $5K to $6500 for the vacation (including cruise fare, onboard charges, airfare, spending money and so on). But for what we spent the cruise and ship were a disgrace!

We are booked next year on the Sun. I would appreciate more specific information on the problems you encountered during your cruise.

Default Re: Sun Princess

so almost a year after my sailing on the sun I guess things have not got a better.we had all those problems last april on the sun.multiple times throughout the cruise all the bathrooms on the main deck were closed for pluming problems,so we had to leave say the pool area and go back to our cabin if we had to go.there was a sewer smell the entire cruise.my wife and I had dirty plates in the buffet three times and dirty silverware in the dining room on formal night.several times the food in the buffet was stone cold, being in foodservice for over 25 years I never thought I had to take a thermometer on vacation with me.I had a seafood caserole that could not have been any more then 90 degrees, well anyone who knows anything about food and food temps knows that seafood at an incorrect temp can make you sick faster than you can say norwalk virus.and guess what it's not norwalk its food poisong.
like I said in and earlier post I had prepaid for the anniverary package, well the day that I had requested it for came,no ballons on the door(like other cabins I seen),no chocolates or wine or any of the items that I had paid for.so I called the pursor desk and explained the problem.well got an attitude there as well, finally got a knock on the cabin door (about 8pm) when I opened the door there was the items sitting right there on the floor, and nobody around.being our fourth time on princess this was the first time we this kind of service.the staff would walk right by you and not even say a word,my other cruises on princess it did not matter where you were or who the staff member was they always said hi,or how are you doing, not on the sun.I hope that anyone going on the sun has a better time then we did and I guess you did on this past cruise.
I won't like one of the other posters said (never sail princess again),I had three good cruises on princess so I am going again, have a cruise booked for october on the caribbean princess.
the worst of the whole thing was when we got back(there was two other couples with us) we all sent a letter to customer relations at princess.yes we got a response, all exactly the same word for word only the names changed(almost).one of the couples got there letter back with their name on the heading but my name through out the letter.I know princess gets a lot of mail but they could atleast get the names straight.
In the letter from princess it did state that I hope you will give princess another chance and for your troubles we will do right by you.well I have booked again,I know it is early but paid the same price as another couple going with us who has never sailed before.so I really do hope that some time in the furture the make good on their promise.the other two couples that were on the sun with us will not go back to princess again, one has gone to another line and the other opted for all inclusive instead.so I know princess did lose four cruisers there and if things don't change on the sun they will lose more.

Stu: Would like to know what the problems that you encountered. Without details, it is hard to understand since many ships, cruise lines, etc., do encounter problems. Promise not to bash you. Just very interested. Have gone on the Sun 6 times and will do so shortly. Thank you.

Just keep in mind we are but one person's opinion.

Very slow service in the dining room to the point where the head waiter had to take over for the waiter and serve our dinner. What should have been 90 minute for dinner many nights turned into 3 hours. Rust spots on the ship's exterior outside of our cabin (first Princess ship I've ever seen this on). Sewer smell on some decks especially deck 8 near the casino. Oil or grease in the toilet bowl just about every day. Cancellation of port call (St. Lucia) first we were told too many ports at once, then were told something of a pier collapse then simply no hands to tie up. Never got a straight story. In Martinque the ship had to trash over 30 mattresses, chairs and furniture resulting from a water leak in cabins on one of the decks, 2 port calls of less than 4 hours each (Nassau and St. Vincent), getting charged for shore excursion in St. Vincent that we never took, broken marble tiles near the entrance to the dining rooms and so on. Finally made worse by the fact that when we booked the cruise we had $200 in credits only to lose them somehow by the time we ported back in Ft. Lauderdale. Sent two letters to Princess, one of the cruise and one on the lost credits. Never heard anything on the lost credits and got form letter on cruise. Both of us getting sick on the cruise didnt help either (upper respitory infection) along with 50 other passengers. But cruise ships are like airplanes the air is constantly being circulated so its quite possible.

I should completed a cruise on The Sun Princess on February 17 and we had a great time. I was in a group of 18 people and not one complaint.
Dining room service was excellent and the food was great.
We did not come across any problems with the ship.

Thank heaven there are people on this post who HAD a good time!!!!! We are looking forward to this cruise and I know it won't be perfect (in life what is??) but just being able to go and see the beauty that the islands present will be wonderful. So the coffee is bad and sometimes the food isn't up to par, sounds like home to me :-)

Stu and Paul

I think all people are different in their experience of a cruise, and your opinion of the Sun Princess is just not as bad as you claim..

I just got off the Sun Princess 2/17/05 and we were a group of 16 couples, and not one of them had any complaints about the Sun Princess sailing..
I have found over the many many years of sailing, if you go into the cruise with a negative attitude about the cruise, the cruise will be not good for you. But on the other hand, if you go into the cruise with a positive attitude, the cruise will be great!!!

I also believe you will find things wrong with other cruise lines, remember attitude in the key word!!!

Good Luck and Happy Cruising

Sorry Charlene but my wife and I have taken over 20 cruises on Princess in the last 10 years and never had one as bad as this. But like I said this is but one person's opinion.
Yes we intend to continue cruising just not on Princess. We'll let everyone know how our next cruise on the QM II goes this summer.

Wow Stu,

QM2 is quite a BIG STEP UP from princess, I'm sure you will have no problems on that cruise...
But the one thing I love about Princess is, the relaz atmosphere, no white gloves, no pretentious people. If I feel like going into the horzion court for lunch with my bathing suit and a cover up on, I can.
But I bet that's not allowed on the QM2...

Enjoy your cruise Stu, but don't forget your white cloves.

we have not sailed yet. i just want to know if anyone has had similar problems such as i have encountered so far. i booked a year early so i could get a few perks.. i was promised the world but only got a few square feet. i booked a balcony cabin, i got that. i wanted close to elavator. NOPE.. I wanted high up. NOPE i wanted a guarantee, paid for it. NOPE THATS NOT ALL, BUT I'LL SHUT UP NOW... THIS WILL BE MY 14TH CRUISE. i am going to enjoy it. but no matter if it's the best i ever go on, it will be the last one on princeless. if i don't tell you a lie, i expect the same in return..oh yeah, i paid for the cruise well in advance. DO YOU THINK??????????? JUST LIKE DATING all is yummy, yummy, that is till the ring goes on... but i refuse to let some lieing hotdog ruin my cruise.
