Default Family Friendly Beaches in Western Carribbean??

Hey its me again.

We are sailing the Western Caribbean (Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel) in July on the CP.

We have a family reunuion going and the kids range from 15 - 4 years old. We will Not be doing any Shore Excursions due to the high cost and my 4 year old is too young for most of them anyways.

SOOOOO..... are there any nice family friendly beaches or areas on these Islands that are in easy walking distance and FREE?? or almost free??

There's plenty to do in the three ports, but I wouldn't call it Free.

Cozumel has the excellent Chankanaab Marine Park, but it's $10 per person plus cab fare both ways (unless you don't mind a 5-mile walk in the heat).

Grand Cayman has the 7-mile beach, but again there's that cab fare.

Ocho Rios has a little beach within walking distance from the cruise pier, so that's at least something.

Too bad you can't do any shore excursions - I'm sure the kids would love StingRay City in Grand Cayman or climbing Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios.

Cozumel does have free beaches, such as San Francisco Beach and Paradise Beach, but you will have to pay cab fare to get there. Also there is a charge at Paradise Beach to use the water stuff. We really enjoyed Chankanaab Park while we were there and I highly recommend it. Although there was a charge to get in, there is a lagoon area for the little ones and the older ones can snorkel from the beach. They have a Mayan ruin replica and a botanical garden. The dolphins are there and even if you don't do the excursion to swim with them you can still see them. There were plenty of beach chairs and shade huts and clean restrooms, as well as showers.

For Grand Cayman your best bet would be 7 mile beach, but there is cab fare. We did the sting ray sandbar trip through Soto's Cruises and had a blast. It was $24/pp and we did two snorkel sites and the Stingray sandbar.

Fabmommy - please reconsider your thoughts on shore excursions- especially in Grand Caymen- Sting Ray City/Sandbar is an experience for all that should not be missed, all ages can experience this wonder of nature. Book independantly - so many great local tour operators to choose from, that are so much cheaper than the ships shore excursions, you can do it for not much more than it would cost you to get to and from the beach when you add up all the incidentals. We love Captain Marvin for this tour, very informative, friendly and helpful.
Cozumel - you can't get to any of the beaches without taking a cab. Channunkaab National Park is a great place to spend the day, so much to do here- really nice beach with good snorkeling, there is an Aquarium, replica of the ruins, gardens to wander around, sea lion show,- all included with cost of admission $10.00 per person. It is very clean. go to www.cozumelinsider.com for some great info on beaches, also go back into the articles section of the board and look for Luisa's article on family friendly beaches.
Jamaica - if you want to do the beach thing you really need to go to one of the hotels and buy a day pass. All ages can go to Dunns River Falls, you don't have to climb the falls if you don't want to, there is a walkway all along the falls. You can get there by just grabbing a cab at the pier. Cab fare and admission to the falls is cheap. You can also book an independant tour very cheaply we like Peat Taylor - check him out on his web site - same as his name.
