Default Coral vs. Dawn

We've sailed on the Diamond last October and the Diamond to Alaska this September. Absolutely love the ship! We'd like to cruise to Alaska mid-September next year, but the Diamond's last trip on that itinerary is Sept 2nd. Our schedules won't allow us to cruise any earlier. The Dawn and Coral both sail the week we can travel. I'd appreciate feedback from folks who have sailed either ship to Alaska. Do either of these ships compare with the Diamond? Thanks.

Default dawn VS Coral

Good evening,
They may both sail that week, but on different itineraries: DAWN sails the insige passage out of Seattle, 7 days;;; while CORAL sails the 7 days Northbound Vancouver-Whittier (Anchorage ), or Southbound 7 days.
If you loved DIAMOND, then you'll have no problem with CORAL, while DAWN is a bit older. Itinerary-wise, DAWN will be virtually identical to what you've done already.
Coral ( and sister ISLAND ) are 2003 vintage, built in Japan; very good ships, smaller than DIAMOND but with a good flow, good amenities, high ratio, lots of balconies as a ratio to total cabins ( like DIAMOND and Co., in her class),overall a pleasant ship to sail in. Holds only 20 passengers more than DAWN & Co., but a good 12000 grt more, thus more space.
DAWN is vintage 1997, slightly less spacious than the newer builds, but none the less a well spaced ship, equal amenities, confortable, and I personally find her '' cosier'' than the newer ones. Her ratio of balconies VS total cabins is lower, and the layout are different, slightler smaller cabins; also more '' private'' than newer ships. She's quite enjoyable to sail on.
Try the Vancouver-Whittier route for a change;; you'll defenitely like the feel of CORAL , your itinerary would be different from what you've done already; and Vancouver is a delighful city to spend 2-3 pre-cruise days in ( which also allows you to checkin rested, relaxed and as early as possible on the day of sailing....).

Happy sailings
Cheers

Thank you for responding, sea legs. We absolutely loved sailing the Inside Passage. We booked excursions in each port, so didn't have the opportunity to enjoy and explore the towns. I wouldn't mind repeating the trip, skipping the excursions to explore on our own. I wasn't able to find flights to Whittier, but flights to and from Anchorage (I believe), then transport to Whittier. Sounds complicated. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Default dawn VS coral

Good evening,

Whittier is the port where Princess docks for Anchorage business.
Anchorage ( John Stevens Airport ) is where you fly in/out.
It's 62 land miles apart.
Direct '' cruise train '' service dockside to/from Anchorage twice a day.
Princess also has well organised bus transfers Whittier-Anchorage ( city)
and Anchorage Airport.
Sailing ex Vancouver ( or back to Vancouver ) on CORAL will take you
to/from Whittier.
Itinerary is very good , full day at sea, three standard ports ( Ketchikan,
Juneau & Skagway ) one day Glacier Park and one day College Fjords
which is quite stunning ( in reveerse if you sail south ).
Arrival in Whittier northbound is around midnite with debark starting
at 7.00am-ish....Southbound, you sailaway approx 9.30pm although you can get on board from noon onwards.

Hope this helps you
Happy sailings
Cheers

We've decided on flying into Anchorage and sailing on the Coral to Vancouver. Is it best to take the Princess transfers (bus from Anchorage to Whittier)? Or can a person choose a different option?

We'd like to fly into Seattle to spend a day or two sightseeing before the cruise. Any airline recommendations for this part of the trip? Then would like to return to Seattle from Vancouver to relax a day before we head home. Any suggestions on transportation from Vancouver to Seattle?

Hi,

Very good choice.
* Transfer to Whittier; are you staying in Anchorage for a day or so before the cruise ?? If so, take the Alaska Railroad train direct to the pier in Whittier; noticeable cheaper than an equivalent service on Princess; lovely scenery; full service train; you turn your checked luggages in at the Anchorage station and see them next at your stateroom door around 3.00pm....; train arrives within 100' walking distance from the pier building, approx 12.20pm; at that time, checkin process is just a whirl and you're on board for lunch within minutes ( keep your carry-on luggae with you if the stateroom is not ready yet, which is unlikely as the debark process in Whittier starts EARLY, around 0630 ,thus the whole turn around is earlier than average ports)
If you are flying up same day as sailing, then Princess bus transfer is your ONLY practical choice.

**Flight from Seattle: Alaska Airlines has a number of non-stop flights from SEA to ANC. They're also the '' main players'' in ANC
**Vancouver-Seattle: an outfit called QuickCoachLines has service from the Vancouver pier to Seattle airport....you might have them stop Seattle downtown....; otherwise, try Amtrak; a short cab ride from the pier to the train station and their train leaves at 5.45pm to Seattle; quite a lovely ride, and you can request '' last debark'' off the ship, thus you max out your stay.
Otherwise, Greyhound busses run 4-5 times a day beteween Vancouver and Seattle ( same as train station, it's intermodal in Vancouver)
I would not recommend any of the Princess transfer service from Vancouver to Seattle; their product is really for the airport.

Happy sailings
Cheers
