Default Getting to Galveston from Houston

I see a curent thread about the Grand Princess leaving Galveston. We have cruised Princes many times but have never gone out of Galveston. We are planning an early January trip and were trying to figure out the best (cheapest) way to get to Galveston from Houston. We are going to fly into Houston from Atlanta a day early because of potential bad weather issues that time of year.

Does anybody have advice on whether to stay over in Houston and drive down the next day, or go right on into Galveston and stay over there? Also, the best way to get to Galveston. Money is always an object.

We did a Carnival cruise from Galveston last year and I found the cheapest transportation option, since their were 4 of us, was to rent a car and drive. We picked up our car at the airport, drove to our hotel (by the airport) for the night, and then drove out to Galveston the next day. I arranged for 2 hotel rooms, through Priceline, at the Wyndham Greenspoint. We also rented a car for our return to Houston. Our cost ended up being about $75 per person. staying overnight in Galveston would of been my preference, but there were no Priceline rooms available and regular rates were much higher than staying in Houston.

Take I-45S from Hobby or Bush IAH to get to Galveston. Allow at least 2 hours from Bush and hour from Hobby depending on time of day and traffic.

Best bet is to rent a car and drive to Galveston. After crossing the Causeway into Galveston, take the Teichman/Harborside exit. Turn left at the stop sign and follow Harborside until you reach the cruise terminals.

Check out Galveston.com for hotel info or call the Chamber of Commerce.

If you fly into IAH you could stay at the marriot at the airport. You go to the lowest level and take the tram to the hotel. The next morning you could use the cruise line transfer and go to the ship. You would nor have to leave the airport before the cruise.

Default Galveston

We are flying into Hobby 4 days before our cruise in December. We will be staying the first night in hotel at airport and taxing to Galveston next day. We opted to rent our car in Galveston so we did not have a drop off fee. We got a transfer from the ship back to Hobby for return.
