I just retured from a 15 day Hawaii cruise on the Island Princess. Everything was wonderful, despite a couple of days of rain that messed up our viewing of the volcano and crater.
However there were a couple of things that I would address:
1. SMOKING.......there were so many areas that smoking was allowed that just permeated to the hall ways, and into many of the common areas that did not permit smoking. The smoking in the casino kept us away.
2. Many of the trivia games that we enjoy were scheduled so close, and at two different locations, that we could not get to some of them on time.
3. The disembarkation was a NIGHTMARE. We were held in the public lounges and theaters several hours past the time we should have been getting off the ship. Many of us had 12 noon flights, and we were held on the ship past 11:00. So there was NO WAY we could make our flights. The staff should also have been able to control the gangway, keeping those with the tags with later times away from the gangways. Those of us that had the early disembarkation tags could not even get through. It was not only frustrating, but extremely dangerous situation. Could have been handled much better.
No preferred embarkation. However, disembarking was supposed to be according to your mode of transportation after the cruise. We had early disembarking tags because of our 12:00 flight. However, since they did not honor this, ALL were kept on the ship until ALL had gone through customs and ALL luggage had been checked. Other than that, (which I ws told was unusual), the cruise was great.
Looks like the SHIP itself was not cleared by the authorities for disembarkation, for whatever reasons, before mid-morning, which basically messed it up for everybody.
This can occasionally happen, and for a pletora of reasons, most of them unfortunately linked with passengers whose '' circumstances'' delay the initial immigration process....
I've seen that happen here in Vancouver one season ago; a competing line ship had its '' clearing for debark'' delayed till 11.00am-ish....turns out three disorderly passengers had to be dealt with first, having been '' detained''on board since late the night before, not after causing quite a disturbance which led them to be charged, thus having to be ''processed''before anything else....
Did the cruise line '' accomodate '' your flight change$$ ???

No, although Princess was aware of our circumstances, there wasn't much they could do since immigration was calling the shots. Fortunately, we had a great travel agent that we called and she made sure our airline knew that we were not "no shows", and didn't penalize us when we had to get rescheduled. We even got bumped up to 1st class with a minimal charge.
