Default Princess upgrade policy

Does Princess ever upgrade between categories? i.e. from Outside to Balcony?

We are in a Guarantee Outside and hoping for an upgrade.

Your chances of an upgrade are better since you booked a guarantee. Most upgrades are within the same cabin catagory that you have booked.Chances are fairly slim that you would get upgraded from an outside to a balcony, but hey who knows, if the "Upgrade Fairy" decides to make a visit.

Got my answer today - we received a two category upgrade, but not to a balcony. Still, I'm pretty happy.

Just for the record on our first Princess cruise we booked an INSIDE guarantee and got a BALCONY, so it DOES happen. On our second cruise we got offered an upgrade to a suite form a balcony, but we chose to take 250 cash back and stay in Balcony cabin.

How can I request an upgrade on the Grand Princess? I called a couple of weeks ago for our 1/14 departure date but was told if they put us on a waiting list for an upgrade that we would have to forfeit our current reservation ... thus chancing that we won't go at all! We currently have an Oceanview Double (E627) but would love any room with a balcony. Any tips appreciated. TIA!

E627 is an obsturucted view. You will be looking at the side of a boat the whole trip!

I would see if you can swith cabins if you can.

Irish--
I know! I don't relish the idea of looking at a boat the entire time which is why I want to upgrade, if possible. I saw that too and cringed! Guess it's better than an inside cabin though. Anyone have tips on how to upgrade??? This is our first cruise. TIA!

Hi derekp,

Welcome to these boards! You'll find a wealth of information here about cruising.

You book a guarantee by deciding which category cabin you will be happy with and booking at that level. There's a chance you will be upgraded to a better category.

For instance, I couldn't stand an inside cabin (claustrophobic), so if I were booking a guarantee I would book an outside (with a window) cabin guarantee. The worst cabin I would get would be an outside cabin anywhere on the ship. The best would probably be a free upgrade to a balcony cabin.

The guarantee cabins cost less than picking a specific cabin.

If you are using a Travel Agent this should have been explained to you. If not-get a new TA! Since this is your first cruise if I were you I would use a TA. Find one who is a "Cruise Specialist". It won't cost you anything (some charge a small research fee, $25.00 or less) and a good TA is invaluable!

BTW, I'm not a TA, I just have a great one!

Hope your first cruise is great! Princess is our favorite cruise line. (So far.)

If you have any other questions, just ask. You'll find that the cruisers here will be more than happy to help!
