we went to Tahiti in March about five years ago I think. We had a ball. It was when Renaissance was still there. You will love the water and the island. The attitude of the people was well we cannot starve and we won't freeze. If we need money we go fish and sell them. Of course PPT is a fairly large city. Bit the pearls are awesome.
I went to FP Aug. 05. And it was great! I stayed at a family villa, Hiti Moana Villa, precruise. Beautiful, clean, safe and very friendly. I personally did not like Papeete. I found it to be on the dirty side. The people however were very helpful as I got lost a couple of times but was directed back to where I needed to go by people who were very nice, polite and of course VERY helpful. As a solo traveler on my first international trip, I brokejust about every "law" regarding traveling alone. I ate the food, spoke to strangers, rode the local bus (when they arrived!), and hitchhiked! All in the first 2 days! Good thing the kids weren't there I would have never heard the end of it. One thing to remember about FP, try to learn some french or tahitian. I found that just attempting to speak the local language open more doors (so to speak) than not. Ma ruu ruu (spelling is wrong but that is what I said when I wanted to thank someone) got me lots of giggles! I was never very good at languages! Enjoy your trip. I hope to be back there soon.
