Default LAX or Another Airport?

We're planning a fall cruise to the Mexican Riveria on the Diamond sailing out of San Pedro. Can anyone give us advice on which airport we should consider for arrival and departure and an approximate cost of taxi, limo or transfer? Thanks!

We just got back off the Saphire Princess last Saturday and we used Long Beach to fly into and out of. This is a breeze of an airport. Real small and easy to get in and out of. A whole lot better than LAX or most of the smaller airports. I would definatley fly through LGB before any other airport down in that area

Just to let you know, Princess sails out of Long Beach not San Pedro. It is a little further distance from LAX.

How sure are you of that info re: Princess?
I am sailing on the Island Princess on Saturday 1/21/06 and we are sailing from San Pedro. I looked it up on the internet, and both the Island and the Sapphire are sailing from San Pedro on Saturday.

Hey Steve, remember we met Kuki and the others in San Pedro. They were leaving the next day from the port which was across the street from the hotel. We are leaving on the Island Princess 2/18 and plan to go to San Pedro. Only Carnival cruises from Long Beach.

OK, I'm wrong. It has been awhile since I dropped folks off for a Princess cruise. At that time it was Long Beach.

CA Cruiser is correct the Get Lei'd Group did go out of San Pedro with Princess. My mistake, sorry.

Super Cruiser: did you do the Princess transfers or take a cab from airport to pier?

Thanks.

I contacted Prime Time Shuttle service and reserved two 9 passenger vans and it was very easy. I called them and they were at Long Beach Airport exactly on time. I got out of the airport and went to grab my luggage and I bumped into the shuttle driver who was looking for me. They billed my credit card and all I did was sign a slip of paper saying they dropped us off gave a tip and was in line for Princess. On the return side of it we picked up our luggage and through customs. We went out to the curb and over to the small island where there is a Prime Time shuttle desk and they came right up with the vans and away we went. VERY EASY in my opinion the best painless way to go. In our case we needed 2 vans for 17 people but if you only needed a van for 1 person that was ok as well. An idea for price is we paid $72.00 for each private van. So with tax our per person price was $9.06 pp each way. It is approx 18-19 miles to the ship from Long Beach airport and approx 23 miles from LAX.

Yes, Long Beach Airport is the best choice. But there aren't a lot of flights coming in there. Jet Blue uses Long Beach and has very low prices, other choices are Alaska Airlines and American. Another choice that is better than LAX is Orange County Airport. It is actually farther from San Pedro than LAX, but is less chaotic.

If you have to fly into LAX check out Enterprise for a car rental. They have a drop off in San Pedro about a mile from the pier. I got an economy car for $15/day. Much cheaper than a taxi or limo service.

Default Princess Transfers

I just wanted to let you know that Princess has transfers to and from LAX only. If you decide to fly into Long Beach, you will have to go by shuttle or taxi.

We have used the transfers from Princess before out of LAX. The thing that I didn't care for with that was that you were on their time frame and not yours. I also didn't care for the fact you get loaded on a big bus and have to wait until the bus is full before you go to the airport after the cruise is over. So instead of just arriving at the airport with your family you arrive with a bus load of people.

Any different than arriving in port with a ship full of folks?

I will be in a day before my cruise on 3/18/06. I have arranged a rental from enterprise at LAX. They will let me drop the car at San Pedro for a $25.00 drop charge which is fine by me. It beats going back to LAX and getting transportation to SAn Pedro when I'm done with the car.

I just got a quote for $45 for 2 passengers from Golden west for a towncar to transfer from LAX hotel to port, and same price from port to LAX. I think I read it was $40 or so for a taxi. I'm kind of a fan of arranged transportation -- but I have been burned on the return trips before. I'd book airline price -- as I'm sure the cost difference for transfers can't be more than $15 each way for either airport. J MO

Thanks for the response. We had problems with the pre-arranged tranportation last year from the pier to LAX. I'm hoping independent transport will be better.
