Last minute walk up

Dear Cruise Mates,

Does anyone have any experience with getting aboard by simply arriving shipside on the day of departure without making advance reservations?

My plan is arrive with my wife and our bags and ask for a "last minute" cabin with the idea that large ships sometimes have "last minute" cancellations.

We live within five minutes of the port so if nothing is available, we can just go home and try again another week.

Who at dockside would one have to contact to make such an unscheduled request?

Has anyone ever done this in the past? I've heard one party who said they did and a several agents who said it was impossible.

I have the time, money and inclination to travel on short notice, but is it posssible?

It's no longer possible at all! Due to security concerns, the cruise lines must submit a complete manifest 72 hrs prior to sailing...so that would be the last opportunity to book.
