Can you bring wine and beer on board

I was just wondering what and how much if any alcohol can be brought onboard at the beginning of our trip.Some of our friends like wine and beer and I know on some of the other lines you can not bring anything.Is Princess different? In their brochure it says only for special occassions but I have read that it is ok to bring winw and beer.We are leaving on March 5th on the Star and would appreciate any info .
