Here are some great pictures of Star Princess arriving at Bremerhaven shipyard for refurbishing.

Default Cause official yet?

These photos seem to indicate that the damaged balconies have been removed. Has there been an official cause listed yet? How can they continue to investigate if they've removed the effected areas already? Do they just go by photos and inspection reports?

CBCruiser,

There's actually much more to it than that. The investigators were aboard the ship for several days before she entered the shipyard in Freeport for temporary repairs, so you can be sure that they went over every square inch of the affected area, interviewed the personnel who were involved in any way, examined the logs of the ship's alarms, and recorded everything in excruciating detail. The "report" of the inspection is actually a log of what they found as they inspected, a lot of photographs showing everything that might conceivably be of consequence, and records of the interviews. They also took swipes or samples of residues and identified pieces that would go to a laboratory for further analysis upon their removal, which may include specimens of undamaged material from areas that were not affected by the fire. The "temporary repairs" at the shipyard in Freeport actually included the next step of the investigative process -- removal of the pieces identified by the investiagors for transfer to the designated laboratory. The analysis may take several weeks, after which the commission will review all of the information and issue a final report on the incident.

The commission that investigates an accident of this type usually consists of the lead investigators, representatives from the laboaratory, a couple safety analysts, and representatives of the interested parties. The members probably have a very accurate picture of what happened based upon the inspection and the interviews, but they won't issue any official determination until they analyze all of the information including the report from the laboratory. It also is not clear that the commisson's final report will be public information.

Norm.

Thanks, Norm, for the info. I really hadn't thought about how long and involved the process was going to be. Hopefully we'll all benefit by their findings and recommendations made for the industry.
