HAS ANYONE DONE THIS TOUR IN JUNEAU? iTS A COMBO TOUR FEATURING THE MENDENHALL GLACIER AND THEN WHALE AND OTHER WILDLIFE WATCHING IN THE STEPHENS PASSAGE. iTS ALMOST 6 HRS . IF YOU HAVE TAKEN IT DO YOU FEEL IT WAS WORTH THE TIME AND $.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. AFTER LOOKING AT THESE TOURS AT SOME POINT THEY BEGIN TO ALL LOOK ALIKE IN VARIOUS CATAGORIES. wE HAVE BEEN WEARING OUT THAT EXCURSION LIST!!!!!! ITS GOOD TO FINALLY MAKE A DECISION.
On our upcomming Regal cruise we will be in Juneau 8 AM till 11PM and we were booking that same shore trip. The more we read about it we found out that you only view the glacier from a pont that has a lodge/ranger station. Im not trying to confuse you, just what we had found out. We really wanted to get out and walk around on the glacier We decided to book ourself outside of the cruise line. we did a helecopter and capt larry's orca and whales. We booked them each. After we did this I found out that Capt larry will arrange the whole package together. I have not used either but Capt Larry/Orca enterprise comes highly recamended. http://www.coastalhelicopters.com/index.htm http://www.orcaenterprises.com/
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. WE THOUGHT WE HAD MADE A DECISION AND YOU JUST CONFIRMED WHAT WE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE MENDENHALL GLACIER VIEWING. WE CANCELLED THAT TOUR. WE ARE GOING TO DO THE HELICOPTER GLACIER LANDING.
IF ANYONE IS WATCHING THE SHORE EXCURSION SCHEDULING I KNOW THEY WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE YET ANOTHER CHANGE IN EXCURSIONS FROM US. WE HAVE WORN OUT THAT LIST!.
We did that excursion last year and enjoyed it but we only had about an hour at the glacier. It is a bit of a hike over to the glacier and unless you jump off the bus and hustle over there first thing you probably won't have time. Even then, you only have a few moments on the glacier.
The whale watching was good and we did see quite a variety of wild life.
It was our second Alaskan cruise and we had done the seaplane glacier tour the previous visit and thoroughly enjoyed it. It toured several glaciers then put down on a river directly in front of one of the advancing glaciers. There was a lodge there where we stopped and had a fabulous meal of grilled salmon. We speak of that trip often.

I THINK I KNOW THE TOUR YOUR REFERRING TO. ITS THE FLIGHTSEE-TAKU GLACIER LODGE ACROSS FROM HOLE IN THE WALL AND TAKU GLACIERS (STILL ADVANCING).
WE HAD A HARD TIME DECIDING ON THIS TOUR. ITS A LONG TOUR AND WE HAD HEARD THAT THE TIME AT THE LODGE WAS LONG AND UNEVENTFUL. THAT PEOPLE WERE READY TO LEAVE LONG BEFORE THE FLOAT PLANE ARRIVED FOR THE RETURN TRIP. IT LOOKED LIKE A WONDERFUL TOUR TO ME. DID YOU FIND THAT IT WAS TOO LONG?
We were on this tour at the end of May (2006). Had a great time (except for 4 small kids). Saw lots of whales feeding, and sea lions basking about on the rocks. The seals even played by the boat to get a good shot of them. The catamaran was nice, plenty of room and well run and maintained. The Glacier itself was awe inspiring with a nice outlook point and building.
We did have problems with the Regal Princess. Will be posting our thoughts in a day or so.
re: Taku Lodge excursion. I found the time a little bit too long because the mosquitos were so bad you couldn't spend too much time outside. The area was incredibly beautiful and strolling about the grounds with a glass of wine was a time for great reflection. You will enjoy the other excursion as well. Enjoy!
