Default Move to Crown Bay

We will be on Caribbean Princess in October. I just heard Princess is moving their ships from the Havensight pier to Crown Bay. Is this all Princess vessels calling at St. Thomas ? This apparently would eliminate our favorite place for shopping, Havensight Mall. Has anyone docked at Crown Bay. What's it like ?

When I was last in St. Thomas (a year and a half ago), they were building a new whole cruise terminal at Crown Bay complete with a shopping complex similar to Havensight Mall. The new terminal is about the same size as the old one, which will remain open as a cruise ship terminal, and thus will double the number of ships and passengers that the island can accommodate each day.

Give the new facility a try. You just might like it!

Norm.

Thanks Norm. We didn't know it was a whole new complex. Looking forward to seeing it.

Is Crown Bay the old Naval Shipyard pier or a different location?

Lisa,

Is Crown Bay the old Naval Shipyard pier or a different location?

I have no idea where the old naval shipyard may have been, but it's toward the east side of Charlotte Amalie.

I'd like to know more about the Crown Bay cruise terminal. I've been told that the Havensight Mall is the place to shop in St. Thomas.

Norm,

Do you know if the shopping area at Crown Bay is open yet? I tried to find info on the St. Thomas websites, but came up with "nada"!

Thanks,

Fern, actually downtown Charlotte-Amalie is THE place to shop. Havensight Mall is a smaller version of downtown, sure the shops are newer, but Havensight doesn't have nearly as much to choose from, and Havensight doesn't have the local craft vendors.

Thanks, LisaK!

Guess we'll be taking a taxi to "town"! I enjoy the local vendor's crafts wherever we go. (Even Jamaica !)

I don't know about "yet" but I think that it will be open when the ships start calling there.

On the Sun Princess last October, we docked at Crown Bay. The terminal wasn't completed yet, but it looks like it will be nice. There were, however, shuttles to town, maybe $2-$3 each way, which is the same you'd pay for a cab from Havensight.

Crown Bay seems a bit out of the way, for now, but it's a different perspective of the island - change is not always bad. You drive through different parts of town that you might be used to seeing.

Last March, however, we did dock at Havensight. You can check out "www.stthomassource.com" and look for Cruise Ship Schedule and it will tell you where your ship will dock.

At either pier, I definitely would recommend going downtown - and shop the "stalls" by the post office.
