Default Hawaii - Car Rental

Has anyone rented a car during a Hawaiian trip at any of the ports of call? Did you reserve a car from the states or on the island? Would you recommend renting a vehicle? We're traveling on the Island Princess on 10/21 and considering a car rental rather than tours. Any thoughts?

We've done several Hawaii cruises, and each time we have rented a car on each island.

I think it's a great way to spend your time on each island, and see what you want to see.

All the majors are at each island.. just have to make sure the one you choose for each island has a shuttle pick up at the pier.

Thank you. One question. . . did you arrange for the rentals stateside prior to the cruise, from the ship or did you wait until you reached the port?

We made arrangements to rent a car on all of the islands when we cruised to Hawaii. We only had a probllem in Kona because the agency we rented from did not have a shuttle from the peir. We rented from the internet.

Thanks. So what I'm understanding then is you rented prior to sailing and had them all set up. Right? In Kona did you have to take a taxi to the rental agency?

We also rented cars in each port in Hawaii (except Kona). We pre-reserved before we left and all of the agencies picked us up at the port.

I recommend doing it in advance - a lot of people didn't and tried to just get on the shuttle buses to rent when they got in, and they were unable to as there were no cars available.

You will be able to see more of the islands on your own in less time than doing excursions on the ship.

Thanks. Was there a reason you chose not to rent in Kona? Is it because of not having a shuttle? I appreciate all the info everyone has provided. I'm definitely going to look into car rental now. I know you can always see more on your own than on a tour. You can do it on your own schedule and stay in one place longer or less and you're not waiting on everyone to get back on the bus! Besides the price of a car rental is normally much less than tours for 2 people.

Any suggestion on which rental agency did you the best?

We didn't rent in Kona because we felt the ship wasn't going to be in port that long and it was a small port so we didn't think the expense of a car was worth it for a few hours.

When we got off the ship, there were people at the port who gave driving tours around the island. We had a young guy who had a Scion XB, the first one we had ever seen (this was a couple of years ago) that took us around the Island for $25 a person. The drive was over 2 hours. He pointed out a lot of places to us, we had a great time at a coffe plantation (and decided to buy a Scion because it fit so many of us old fat people in it!). He showed us where several famous people had homes, etc.

When we got back to the port, we went shopping and had lunch at a neat restaurant that had outside seating on the water and then walked back to the tenders.

There as some famous rapper walking around too with an entourage in town that was staying there. All the young people were chasing after him, it was pretty comical. He just walked slowly and sucked on a big cigar.
