Default Tendering in Lahaina

1st post We will be on the Island Princess 1-26-07 to Hawaii. First cruise to Hawaii. Understand tendering into Lahaina can be prolonged. Any advice on how long we should allow to get ashore before scheduling an independent tour? Scheduled 8:00 AM arrival off Lahaina.

Jim,

1st post

Welcome aboard!

Understand tendering into Lahaina can be prolonged. Any advice on how long we should allow to get ashore before scheduling an independent tour? Scheduled 8:00 AM arrival off Lahaina.

Tendering in any port of call can be prolonged because shore excursions have reserved times for tenders, so passengers going ashore on their own do so on a "space available" basis. Princess has a very good system of issuing tender tickets so you can go relax in a lounge while waiting your turn, but that does not get you ashore any more quickly. I don't recall the wait for a tender lasting more than a couple hours on any ship, but there are no guarantees.

Basically, the only reliable way to avoid the wait for an available tender is to book a shore excursion through Princess. You might find a short (and thus inexpensive) excursion, such as a walking tour of downtown Lahaina, that will go ashore on one of the first tenders and that will end by 9:30 or 10:00. If you have your heart set on doing something really ambitious, like the "Road to Hana" or the bike ride down Haleakala, though, I really would recommend booking the tour through Princess rather than through a private operator. The difference in price won't be more than a couple dollars and you won't have to deal with trying to get ashore in the space left over between the shore excursions.

Have a fantastic cruise!

Norm.

I did do the original post but I do appreciate the info. We cruising on 10/21 and hadn't decided about Lahaina but now with this info I can make a better decision on getting off the ship. Your suggestion of even a mediocre tour will get you off sooner and then you can do what you want on the return. Thanks.

Any suggestions on tours on the islands. Some better than others?

Thanks for the info Norm. have tendered before, but didn't pay attention to the time because had nothing planned ashore except shopping, etc. Great idea about the walking tour getting you priority on the tender. Thanks again.
