Default Internet use on Princess

It might interest those of you who are Platinum or above with Princess that as of April 1, 2007 you will no longer have unlimited use of the internet. The following is a quote from Princess that I guess is selfexplanitory
"Complimentary Internet Packages
Each Platinum Member will receive a credit towards the purchase of a package in our Internet Caf├ęs.

# $75 for voyages of 7 days or less (equivalent to 150 minutes)
# $100 for voyages of 8-20 days (equivalent to 250 minutes)
# $200 for voyages of 21 or more days (equivalent to 500 minutes)
You can use your credit towards a larger package if necessary, or enjoy all those minutes - compliments of the Princess Captain's Circle!
(effective on voyages beginning on or after April 1, 2007)"

I guess that is the start of their cutbacks, I wonder what will be next?
Jim..

I haven't quite figured out why people are so upset about this. I check email daily just to make sure things at home are ok. 150 minutes on a 7-day cruise?

I've seen so many people, who had free Internet 'hogging' computers, just surfing the Internet, etc. Your're on a cruise for petes sake.

No big deal in my opinion.

150 minutes is 2.5 hours of Internet time. We wouldn't use 1/3 of that so I don't have a problem with this plan at all. Princess still has the best loyalty program in the industry. One thing you can bet on is that this change occurred as the result of someone taking advantage of the free unlimited access and spent hour after hour on the Internet. When it started costing Princess a lot of money they simply reigned it in a little.

My understanding is that everyone PAYS for wireless Internet connections with their laptop, even Platinum and Elite. No free wireless whatsoever.

We leave tomorrow for back-to-backs on the Crown Princess so I'll check on the wireless thing while onboard.

Thanks for noticing the change and posting it, although it would have been nice if we had found out from Princess. That said, I have to wonder how much of this is due to Internet hogs on some cruises? On our last cruise, we checked our e-mail and local news each evening -- no longer than 10-15 minutes online. However, some Platinum and Elite members we always there and a couple boasted that they spent a minimum of 3 or 4 HOURS every day online, and even more on days at sea. And that didn't include their kids!! Unfortunately, the crew member on duty rarely had the nerve to ask those people to sign off for a while so others that were waiting could get to use the computer.

If you are spending that much time online why bother going on a cruise. I do an email check most days and could certainly make do with the minutes they will be providing me with. Unless of course the service is extremely slow which it can be at times.

It took us about 15 minutes just to get to our email a yahoo. So I dont know how people were checking and responding to a few emails in less than 30 - 45 minutes. I estimate I could do in less than 5 minutes at home what would take 45 minutes on a ship

And Princess says this is complements of Captains Club. Complements you have got to be kidding they take away and use the word complements.

This is an outrage and has nothing to do with any internet hogs only the big $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. I did 6 cruises in the last year and a half with Princess only to have this benefit yanked out from under me.

Someone has to help pay the fine for killing that whale. On our last cruise to Hawaii I was waking up at 3 AM for over a week & the Internet provided me with something to do & there were no lines of people waiting to use the terminals at that time. I myself am a slow typist & even checking the e mail once a day would more than use up my allotment. It's sad that Princess couldn't have thought of another way to still give their best customers the free service without almost eliminating the benefit.

Im very upset about not having free Internet. I went on Princess just because of free Internet.

I went on a total of 50 min everyday, 10 min here 25 min there though out the day. Every time I went on the net the computer room was empty. If it got crowded I left. I hardly saw the Internet crowded except the day before the cruise ends when everyone is printing out their airline boarding passes.

Yes, I still have 2.5 hrs free, but now I have to keep track of my time. I like to go on the net about 7 hrs a cruise, now I can only be on it for 2 hrs. I like the net because the cruises are boring at times. When you been on so many cruises everything gets old so I like to go on the Internet.

It takes sometimes 1 min to get on that you pay for and the computers always freeze. All I do on the net on the ship is check my local paper, padres, chargers sites, and check some other things and Im on it for 25 min.

I have been on 15 Princess Cruises with in 8 years and went on them for the free Internet. I was so excited when I reached Platinum level because of the free Internet. I saw a big downfall with them since I first sailed on them and always talked highly of them. Having free Internet is what sold me. Now, why should I stay with Princess?

Princes is not doing this because of Internet hogs. They just are cheap asses and don't care about passengers that cruise on them all the time. They care only about people that will cruise once or twice.

I have been on RCCL eight times, NCL once, HAL five times, Carnival twice, Celebrity twice and Cruise West three times.

Most likely Im going to go on Celebrity more often. It's the principle behind it.

As far as I know, Princess is the ONLY line that offers free internet to Platinum and above cruisers. The others don't offer ANY free internet.

I still think it's pretty nice to get that FREE time even if they did cut back some.

a free service ultimately costs everybody because the cost is included in fares. I never used the interenet on my last cruise but I guess I was paying for everyone else who got to use it for free. Why shouldn't you pay for internet service if you feel the need to use it. Its no different than and all inclusive resort with drinks included. I'm not a drinker but I'm still paying the same as others who may drink alot.

Default Internet On A Cruise

Like someone said on here...leave the Internet at home, If you have to conect to home while away or check in on family.....there is always a the phone calling card method for cell phones or ship phones.
Princess is a great company and offers its patrons a lot for the buck they pay to cruise.....and it ticks me off that people bash Princess over such a small deal as Internet service.......

Now if it was the Toliets not flushing you would have something to complain about.........

Cheers.........

There is a simple reason that Princess has been making cutbacks in the loyalty programs.

They have way too many loyal customers and the number crunchers found this is the best way to get rid of some of those loyal customers.

OH!!! Please already with this Princess Bashing!!! If your that ticked about it...... go on another crusie line. It seems that all you whiners only go on cruises for STATUS RIGHTS/POSITIONS insted of a vacation.

If you feel that your being ripped off by Princess's added promos.. don't join them.I am confident they have very good reasons for making these changes.....and....is the ONLY reason the changes were made.

It is a cutback and while 150 minutes is better than most other lines the connect times can be used up in a short period of time. You have to remember that this "150" minutes is the time you are connected to their on board system and not to the Internet. There are many people who forget to "Log Off" and lose minutes until their connection times out.

Depending on the satellite connection and download speed you may only get half that time "online". I also know how to maximize my system in order to get the most out of the bandwidth available.

On my last Princess cruise I did receive a refund on my Internet package because of the slow Internet speed. Holland America was the only other line that has done this. At least I didn't have to ask HAL for it.

For me I use the connection for the board, so it's required and it also comes out of my pocket. For most people 150 minutes would probably be more than adequate to check email and a limited amount of surfing.

Take care,
Mike

Okay people - quit your belly-aching for pete's sake. If you don't like Princess, go on another line.

Personally, I think Princess does an outstanding job. I think the food and service in the regular dining rooms is very good ... at least you feel that the people serving you are pleased to do their job and make you happy, too. Same thing with the cabin stewards.

The specialty dining room - particularly Sterling Steak House - outstanding.

Now as to the free internet for repeat customers - why are you complaining ... what's wrong with FREE!!! They don't have to offer it but do for people who have already sailed with them on 5 cruises. Seems to me that's quite a nice bonus - wasn't aware that anyone else did it (though Mike's email sounds like HAL might). My cruise in April will give me a $100 FREE access for 10 days ... not too shabby.

Anybody who forgets to log off really needs some basic internet instruction.

So they cut back from completely free internet - it's still very generous, and I'm sure the cut back WASN'T because they were trying to get rid of their loyal customers. How naive can you be! They want repeat customers who will continue to spread the good word about a great cruise line.

I've been on 40+ cruises and a great many cruise lines. My favorite since I first cruised with Princess is Princess and will remain so for many reasons.

Because a poster hasn't cruised as a passenger, doesn't mean that they don't know what's going on on a ship - I'm sure they know a great deal more than any passenger. Their posting here doesn't mean they aren't knowledgeable. And, their status as a crew member really has nothing to do with this thread. They are as entitled to their opinion as I am to mine - and should not be put down! In fact, it should not have even been brought up by the other poster. Makes me wonder how the other poster even knew that they hadn't "cruised" before!!!

Karlie hope to sail with you some day - would love to meet you!

Hey guys if you really want an internet bonus - travel on Celebrity cuz after 5 cruises you'll get a whole 10 minutes FREE internet ... now that stinks! I know your 6th cruise with both Celebrity and RCI will give you equal status (though I haven't heard that RCI gives you the wonderful 10 minutes FREE internet). That's about as long as it can take to log on. Whoopee!!!!

By the way, Princess giving FREE internet to their LOYAL customers does not AFFECT in any way the fare. And, if you don't drink - fine that's your choice, but as far as I know, all cruise lines (except the ultra deluxe) add an automatic 15% tip to the drinks. Again - this does not AFFECT the fare.

The biggest money maker on cruises is the Photography Department - just FYI! Not the bars and not the casinos.

Boy are you guys taking everything out of context. If you look back at the original post you will see that I was just notifying everyone of Princesses new policy. How you can take that as Princess bashing is beyond me. However it is disheartening when they take something that you have away from you and one can't help but think "What will be next?"
I still think that Princess is the best and will continue to sail with them. In fact I have 6 cruises booked right now to add to the 58 that I already have. ***Edited to remove unecessary language***

Now isnt that just so like your typical responses all threw these posts.... and totally being unable to handle a discussion or rebuttle from words you claim are only from what you read or saw or heard....

but in fact are your honest true thoughts speaking from behind your PC Monitor where you hide and start venting your inner anger out here in internet land SEEKING ATTENTTION THAT YOU SO REQUIRE

Well how is it that once you got the attention you were seeking you try now to weasel your way out of it and post what you did.

Why not let's all take this thread back to its original purpose ... a discussion of Princess' reduction in loyalty perks. Maybe we can all learn something about the revised program that way.

Please keep things within the guidelines, no bashing or name calling. If this keeps going, we'll just get rid of the whole thread. Now, lets play nice from here on out, OK?
