Default 2 recovered alive after falling from cruise ship - Grand

GALVESTON, Texas - A man and woman fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, but both were rescued after a four-hour search and appeared to be in good condition, a cruise line spokeswoman said.

The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman fell 50 to 60 feet from a cabin balcony, said Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises.

She said the cruise line did not know how they fell overboard. Their ship, Princess Cruise’s Grand Princess, was about 150 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas, at the time.

The captain turned the ship around after friends of the man and woman notified the crew at about 1:30 a.m. CDT that they had gone overboard, Benson said. The ship’s crew used high-powered spotlights and rescue boats in the search. One passenger was rescued by the ship’s boats at 5:30 a.m. and the other at 6 a.m., according to a statement by the cruise line.

The search was aided by the Coast Guard, said Lt. j.g. Jillian Lamb at the District 8 Command Center. A nearby cruise ship also offered assistance, she said.

The man and woman, whom the cruise line declined to name, were examined by the ship’s medical staff.

“They appear to be in satisfactory condition and we hope that no further medical attention will be needed,? Benson said.

Grand Princess was carrying 2,783 passengers on a seven-day tour of the western Caribbean.

I'm waiting to hear how they managed to "fall off" a balcony. I'm even more amazed they weren't sucked under the ship.

What surprises me is that they are allowed to continue on the cruise. They should make this against the law. Anyone who jumps ship should be arrested and charged with causing distress to others passengers and ordered to pay the cost of the rescue.

How in the world does one fall off a cruise ship?
The railings are high enough to prevent that unless one is standing or sitting on the rail, right?
In this case there were two of them. How can this happen? I'm wondering if they were impaired in some way.

Of course they were impaired. Probably a lovers' quarrel. Can you imagine rejoining the cruise after that? What a great topic of discussion at the dinner table.

"So tell me, how did it feel to go overboard?"

Nothing wrong with being nude on the cruise. Just stay away from the railings!!

Updated story says the couple did not board together. Must have met onbaord. The guy was naked in the water. Probably trying to do it on the balcony and got carried away. Sounds like a hook-up gone bad.

Monday, March 26, 2007 Cruise Line Probes Why 2 Fell Overboard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[i]GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- Princess Cruises is investigating how two passengers tumbled off a cruise ship cabin balcony and into the Gulf of Mexico, trigging a four-hour rescue effort.

The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman fell 50 to 60 feet early Sunday from the woman's cabin. Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises, said it appeared to have been an accident.

The ship, the Grand Princess, was about 150 miles off the coast of Galveston when friends notified the crew around 1:30 a.m. that the two had fallen, Benson said.

The captain turned the ship around, and the crew used high-powered spotlights to scan the water and launched rescue boats to find them. One passenger was pulled into a rescue boat around 5:30 a.m., and the other was found about 30 minutes later, according to a statement by the cruise line. A Coast Guard helicopter crew, called in to help, spotted the male passenger.

The man and woman, whom the cruise line declined to name, were examined by the ship's medical staff. They sustained minor injuries, Benson said.

"Just falling 50 feet, can you do some serious damage and basically knock the wind out of you," said Coast Guard swimmer Micah Franklin, who participated in the rescue. "If you survive that part, then you've got, depending on your swimming ability, how long are you going to be able to survive in the seas."

The waves were swelling up to 6 feet, and the wind was gusting to up to 30 mph, Franklin told NBC's "Today" show Monday. He was he was impressed the two survived.

The rescued passengers were not married and did not come aboard together, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday. Both were cooperating with investigators, Benson said.

Benson said the railing around the cabin balcony is at least 4 feet high and meets all standard safety requirements.

"What we're looking at is how they went over," she said. "That's all part of the investigation."

The ship was on its way to Costa Maya on Mexico's coastline, Benson said. The Grand Princess was carrying 2,783 passengers on a seven-day tour of the western Caribbean.

Well, I've visted 4 other cruise message boards including the one on MSNBC.

Here's the current opinions of "what happened" -

Guy was standing on a chair naked getting a....umm...err...well...he was standing on the chair & use your imagination! He lost his balance & the girl grabbed him & managed to fall over in the water together.

Both were standing on the rail doing a balance beam act or the "King of the World". Lost their balances & went overboard.

Both were stupidly drunk & sitting on the rail together & fell overboard while entertaining friends due to lack of space on the balcony.

Both were doing something rather naughty on the balcony & managed to fall over.

That's the current opinions I've seen around the net.

Any others I've missed? Dave - I KNOW you'll have a good one for this!!

Oh BTW...the "other" board has a few people who are hearing from family about what happened onboard.

Announcements were being made all night over the PA system. Apparently all passengers were told to stay in their cabins & not leave. The cabin stewards were to check each cabin to make sure people where they were supposed to be.

One person did video tape one of the rescues. I'm assuming this will show up on YouTube.com at some point in time.

Cassandra,

I think you have all the scenarios covered. I will be curious to what they find with their investigation.

I heard this morning on the radio that they were trying to reenact the Titantic scene.... you know the one where they were flying. Either way.... dumb. Also, they were on the other side of the railing. Excuse me...... the railings are there for a reason!!!!!!!!

Good evening,

What I find totally apalling here is this: not only are the two idiots are allowed to STAY ON BOARD AND CONTINUE SAILING ( she allegedly chose to get off at the next port and gete medical attention....mental as well as physical, hopefully...) , but, Princess has ''gracefully'' abided to their request for total anonymity and secrecy, per their request !!!! and will not publish a thing about names, circumstances, residence, etc.etc...
Now, in my opinion, two wrongs certainly don't make a right. These idiots caused upheaval and distress to 2,781 other passengers, over 1,100 crew members, a ## of CoastGuard staffers, put their own life at danger, triggered a costly rescue....and PRINCESS ALLOWS THEM the ultimate request to ''hush hush'' ????? What's next ??? They're offered a free cruise as compensation for what they went thru ??? A special police escort upon debarkation in Galveston to protect their confidentiality ??? Special attendant's service on board to ensure nobody sees them and bothers them ???? A special waiver excusing them of payment for all the rescue manoeuvres involved and the loss of port time ??? Hey, why not ???

I suggest the cruise line weak-kneed here....there has to be something else here....
Of course, the other 2,781 pax probably just had to put up with all of that....but who cares about them ....
My opinion...

Cheers
Claude

David,

I think you are already beyond my age. I am living in one long "Endless Summer" and in perpetual youth. It is something about the spring water here in Florida.

Cruise ships are not the only thing people jump from. I think you have a better chance surviving if you hit the water.

Man Jumps From Empire State Building
Saturday, April 14, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK (AP) -- A man jumped to his death Friday out the window of a 69th-floor law office in the Empire State Building.

Police responded to the New York City landmark shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg _ covered in a gray sock _ on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor.

The tragedy in the 102-story building closed portions of the busy Midtown Manhattan street while the investigation continued.

Police identified the man as Moshe Kanovsky, a lawyer in his 30s.

More than 30 people have committed suicide at the Empire State Building since it opened in 1931, including a 21-year-old man in February 2006. The skyscraper reaches 1,454 feet to the top of its lightning rod.

I recently read somewhere about a girl (or young woman) who fell five stories inside a cruise ship . I guess in the centrum area. I did not see any further updates.
