Default Grand Princess --balconies? Iceland/Norway trip

We are planning to take the Grand Princess 12 night Iceland & Norway trip out of Southampton next August. Can anyone advise us on best/most private balconies? Do the minisuites on Dolphin have any privacy on the balcony or are you better off with a basic balcony stateroom on another deck?

Also, has anyone taken this trip in the past? Can't seem to find any reviews. Would love to hear about the itinerary, etc... from others!

Thanks,
Mary Ann

Been on the Grand before and had a friend who had a balcony on the stern. They enjoyed it and it had more privacy than a side balcony.

Thanks for the idea...sounds like that might be best. I hate the idea of people looking down at me / spilling their drinks??? that happened once before on our Alaska cruise! Mary Ann

For Grand Class Princess ships ( Grand, Golden, Sapphire, Diamond, Star, Caribbean, Crown and new Emerald) - regular balcony cabins on port or starbord side of ships on decks Lido, Aloha, Baja, Riviera decks are sized 9 ft. wide x 5 ft. deep and are fully covered by ceiling overhang. No one can look down on you but those below can look up at you if you are standing at balcony rail.

Caribe deck cabins on starboard and port sides are sized 9 ft wide x 9 ft. deep and are covered by ceiling overhang for first 5 ft. When sitting under this cover, no one from above can see you.

Dolphin deck (mini-suite) cabins on starboard and port sides are sized 9 ft. wide x 7 ft. deep and have no ceiling overhang. No privacy from those standing on balconies above you.

Aft facing Category BB balconies on Baja decks, Caribe deck and Dolphin are regular balcony cabins but the balconies are sized about 11 ft. wide x 10 ft. deep and are fully covered by ceiling overhang. No one above or below can see you.

Thank you so much for that great information!

Do you know if there is much problem with motion in the aft cabins on the Grand? I've heard that she may not handle motion as well as some of the other ships.

Any opinions if its worth a lack of privacy on balconies for the extra space of the minisuites??

Appreciate so much everyone's help with this decision.

We have been on the Grand and the Golden. They both handle the seas very well.

Here is something on motion sickness that I posted a while back.

"BACKGROUND: The prevalence of motion sickness approaches 100% on rough seas. Some previous studies have reported a strong association between location on a ship and the risk of motion sickness, whereas other studies found no association. This study was undertaken to determine if there is a statistical association between the location of the passenger cabin on a ship and the risk of motion sickness in unadapted passengers. METHODS: Data were collected on 260 passengers on an expedition ship traversing the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica, during rough sea conditions. A standard scale was employed to record motion sickness severity. RESULTS: The risk of motion sickness was found to be statistically associated with age and s e x. However, no association was found with the location of the passenger cabin. CONCLUSIONS: Previous research reporting a strong association of motion sickness and passenger location on a ship, studied passengers in the seated position. Passengers who are able to lie in a supine position are at considerably reduced risk of motion sickness. Expedition or cruise ships that provide ready access to berths, allow passengers to avoid the most nauseogenic positions. The location of the passenger cabin does not appear to be related to the likelihood of seasickness."

All our cruises on Princess have been in the mini suites on the Dolphin deck. No overhang is not a concern to us. I'll take the extra space and tub for the wife over a covered deck anytime.
