We sailed the Diamond from Vancouver to Whittier last May. Disembarking was probaly the smoothest I have ever seen. We were off the ship by 9:45. We were not able to take the train because of it being the first ship of the season, the train wasn't running until later in the evening. We rode the bus to Anchorage. This was really smooth walked straight off the ship and stepped on bus. Our driver was very imformative , giving us lots of imformation on Alaska and the area.
We were on the Diamond last September (Vancouver/Whittier) We were off the ship about 9:00 AM. We purchased the transfers ($73.00) per person and we stepped off the ship and on to our waiting bus to take us to Anchorage. Our flight was not until 7:30 pm so we elected to store our luggage at the Eagan Convention Center (free with purchase of transfer) and explore Anchorage. We had the rest of the day to do so. Buses leave every 30 minutes to the Airport, last one at 6:30 p.m. (also free if you have purchased the transfer) The transfers do sound a little pricey, however we found them to be wonderful for us. We had not been to Vancouver or Alaska before and it took alot of the worry and hassle out of our trip.
The transfers were from the Airport to our hotel, our hotel to the cruise ship, then in Whittier to Anchorage, plus storing our luggage in Anchorage, then the transfer to the Airport. It was really a smooth transition each transfer.
WE are leaving this coming Saturday, Vancouver to Alaska(Diamond) and we are renting a car in Whittier and driving to Anchorage with another couple. Rate is cheap BUT drop off charge for ANchorage is 150% more than the dailey rate.
