Default Caribbean Princess Balcony on Riviera deck

We just got our cabin assignment, balcony cabin number R517 on the Riveria deck of the Caribbean Princess. I've heard all sorts of stuff about covered, uncovered balconies but wondered if anyone could tell me if this is a good room assignment.

That being said, it's our first balcony and our 8th cruise so we love cruising even if it's in an inside cabin so we are not too picky. It's our 15 year anniversary so we decided on a balcony.

Just looking for a little info on the balcony and if it's covered, etc. Thanks in advance!

For Grand Class Princess ships ( Grand, Golden, Sapphire, Diamond, Star, Caribbean, Crown and new Emerald) - regular balcony cabins on port or starbord side of ships on decks Lido, Aloha, Baja, Riviera decks are sized 9 ft. wide x 5 ft. deep and are fully covered by ceiling overhang. No one can look down on you but those below can look up at you if you are standing at balcony rail.

Caribe deck cabins on starboard and port sides are sized 9 ft wide x 9 ft. deep and are covered by ceiling overhang for first 5 ft. When sitting under this cover, no one from above can see you.

Dolphin deck (mini-suite) cabins on starboard and port sides are sized 9 ft. wide x 7 ft. deep and have no ceiling overhang. No privacy from those standing on balconies above you.

Aft facing Category BB balconies on Baja decks, Caribe deck and Dolphin are regular balcony cabins but the balconies are sized about 11 ft. wide x 10 ft. deep and are fully covered by ceiling overhang. No one above or below can see you.

Default thanks for the information

Do the balcony's sides have glass, split rail, what? so if you are in your room, can you see straight out (even at ground level) or are they a solid material?

The sides are plastic/metal and you cannot see through them.

The railing has plexigrass under it. You can see out from your cabin.

Interesting thing about balconies that are exposed for some of their width...

We were on the CP over 4th of July and observed something which I have no idea how long has been going on,

In the late afternoon, an hour or so before sail away from both ST. Maarten and St. Thomas, people were throwing food off the balconies, in essence feeding the gulls. At one point there must have been over 20 birds swooping around mid-ships, diving for the tidbits that were thrown into the air. A few came within a couple of feet of our balcony on fly-bys. If you are at all afraid of birds, this was not a scene for you.

We were on the Aloha deck, so we had cover above us, but those on the lower decks that didn't have this cover were not at all happy with what was happening.

Why you may ask?

Well, some gulls decided that they needed to relieve themselves while in flight, and guess where it landed?

I really don't like this, and we never saw it on our earlier cruises.

Anyone else care to chime in on this?

At any rate, having seen this, were we ever to sail this or a similar Princess ship again, I would definitly not get a balcony on the lower decks...but thats just me.

I have seen the gulls feeding, but they did not poop on me.

We were on the Dolphin Deck with no cover.
