Default Beaches in Hawaii

My wife and I are sailing Diamond Princess to Hawaii on March 17th,2008. Does anybody know of any beaches close to the ports that are quick and easy to get to? Is there any public transportation to the beach? Hope somebody knows or is going to Hawaii before us and can let us know.

Happy Sailing

Do you know which islands in Hawaii you are going to?

Maui has the best beaches.

Sorry, my dh neglected to give the important facts of specific islands we will be visiting. We are going to Kona, Maui, Hilo, Kauai, and Honolulu. The only island we haven't decided on a possible excursion for is Kona and that is probably where we would like to do the beaches but as with any vacation, nothing is set in stone. Also, if it matters we are tendered in on Kona.

Kona only has one beach that is walk able, otherwise you would need a car. There is a beach at the end of Kona (east side) that is called disappearing sands, that is because the sand disappears for about a month and then comes back. They don't know where it goes. This is the only beach in Hawaii that I have swam with turtles. There could have been more, but I have not been to them.

Maui has the nicest beaches in the whole state.

I agree, they are the best. For all your stops you can rent cars and tour for a lot less than the ship tours. We drove in each of those locations except for Honolulu. We just picked out all of the places we wanted to go and followed the maps, which were quite easy.
In Honolulu though you can get a day pass on the local bus system. It takes you all over the island. You can go to Hanauma Bay if you like to snorkle from the beach. Nice coral beds. On the way you can stop off at Diamond Head. It's about a 3/4 hour climb to the top. Worth it though. The bus also takes takes you to the North Shore. We were there in March a few years ago, and the waves were amazing - lots of surfers out there.

Carla & George,
We meet again but on a different website!
re: accessible beaches. I don't know what you have planned for Kauai, but that is one island that has a beach very close to the pier.
It is convenient that there are free (driver tips only) shuttle buses right on the pier that you can take to the beach. The water is calm at that beach as it is in a cove-like setting, in front of a hotel.
So even if you have a tour planned early in the day, you could still spend a little time on the beach there.
See Ya elswhere!
