We sailed the Panama Canal on the Island Princess in October, 2007-Los Angeles to FT. Lauderdale and it was a fantastic trip. There were not 15 minutes out of the 15 days I would have changed. If you go to Guatemala be sure to go to Antigua, we took a taxi but the reports I heard from passengers on the ship tour were excellent, also. Have a wonderful cruise...as if there is any other kind. ~~~Dana[/img]
We were on in February and the ship is beautiful. Not too big but big enough. Really enjoyed our trip thru the Canal. It compared very favorably to Summit which is the same size. I have a review posted on this site with much more detail.
You will enjoy this. We are booked on the Grand Princess for next February. Only 59 days, but who's counting?
I've sailed on her 3 times and the Island once - all to the Canal. They're both great ships - they called them Panamax cuz they just fit in the Canal. Plan on sailing on the Coral again in March.
Don't miss the ferry boat excursion through the other 2 locks and over to the Pacific Ocean ... outstanding. And, generally I don't like shore excursions. Skip the train trip - goes so fast you can't take pix and then the rest of it is a lot of bus traveling.
I cruise the Emerald Princess, Eastern Caribbean on April 16, 2012
We sailed on the Island to the Canal 11/10/07. It was a wonderul trip. The ship is beautiful. Although completely booked you never felt crowded. We did the tradidtional 2nd seating dinner. the service was excellent. We were able to visit all the scheduled ports. We had a balcony stateroom on the Strboard side which was a great vantage point for the trip through the Canal. The Canal was very interesting. There will be an onboard commentator that will broadcast while going through the canal.
We've cruised thru the Panama Canal 6 times, it's one of our favorite itineraries.
Panama City is always a fun destination for us, when the ship stops at Fuerto Amador. It's a fun 25c mini-bus ride from the tender port to downtown Panama City although the ride is not for the faint-hearted. The 10 mile ride is usually accomplised in 10 minutes including all the stops to let passengers on/off. You zoom thru the streets at the speed of light, past red lights and all! LMAO
One time I filmed the entire ride from tender port to downtown, it's a hilarious 10-minute clip of speed, horns, red lights and more horns that you ever heard in your life. Plus the minibus stopping in the middle of the road to let passengers on and off with cars overtkaing the minibus on both sides as passengers are alighting!
The Mrs likes the casinos and the shopping mall in downtown Panama City.
