Laundry Facilities

Hello Cruisers, My husband and I are cruising to Hawaii on March 17th on the Diamond Princess. Very excited!!
I was wondering how much it cost to do a load of laundry and if they supply the detergent and fabric softner sheets or do you buy that too and how much?
I also heard that if you where a platinum member that princess would do your laundry for you, Is this true?
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Aloha![/i][/b]

The washers and dryers were $1.00 each (quarters). You have to buy detergent, there are machines ont he wall with the detergent and I think those were $1.00 each as well. If I recall there was a change machine on the wall also.

Lucky you! Hawaii will be our next cruise destination. Laundry rooms on the Diamond are well lit and clean. There are two ironing boards and irons available. No charge for using them. I think it's $1 per load to wash and the same to dry. The change machines always seemed to be out of change, so bring quarters or get change at the Pursers desk. Laundry detergent and fabric sheets are extra. I think about $1.00 each. I'm sensitive to soaps, so bring along my own powdered soap and dryer sheets. I double bag them in ziploc bags and toss them in our suitcase. It's convenient and makes our clothes smell wonderful when we take them out of the suitcase. One thing we always pack is a small collapsable mesh basket. You can pick one up at Walgreens or Wal-Mart. It'll lay flat in the bottom of your suitcase. Just pop it open and place it in your stateroom's closet and toss your laundry in it at the end of the day. When you're ready to do laundry, just grab the basket and go. Princess offers free laundry service for the highest level of membership. We're Platinum members working on achieving the next level. :-) Have a wonderful cruise!

:D We are on the Diamond right now on our way back to L.A. Laundry is $1.00, my wife just went down to the local laundrymat and bought a few of the small boxes of what she likes. Unless you are in a Suite you have to be a Elite member which is 15 cruises with Princess or more than 150 days at sew with them! Water has been a little rough going over but was very nice going around the Islands. The last time we went it was in March and the entire trip was smooth, hope you enjoy yours. Thay have Irons in the laundry rooms, not are allowed in your rooms. Enjoy 8)

It's great to have self-service laundries on those long cruises. We usually take a roll of quarters with us because the change machines can be broken or out of change. And why wait in line at the pursers desk :) I purchase small travel size laundry soap at WalMart - it's All detergent. Each little bottle does 2 loads. I usaully put some softner sheets in a zip-lock baggie. Yes Elite level gets free laundry, dry cleaning and shoe shinning. We need two more cruises and leave Sunday for number 14 - San Diego - Mexico.

Just to save the hassle of rounding up enough quarters and taking a chance that the machines will not be out of soap we just throw some powdered laundry detergent in a baggie and bring it with us.

We were on a b2b two years ago in Alaska and I can't say how we appreciated those washing machines! Having a self-service laundry on board let us just bring enough clothes for 1 week and then on "turn around day", we just washed all of our clothes and started all over again.

if you are platimun you get free alundry and dry cleaning along with a fee mini bar set up on the day you begin. The laundry takes about two days to get back to you so plan ahead.
The washing machines seem to be always BUSY and cost $1 in quarters to make go but they do provide the detergent and the dryers are free if I recall correctly

We are also going on the March 17 cruise. Have you decided what to do in Kona? Thanks, Scamper01

Free laundry for Elite members on Princess

We are Platinum and have never gotten free laundry, it is reserved for Elite Princess members.

I just returned from the Diamond Princess.
The change machine on Emerald deck seemed to be working but I suggest you make sure you have the proper change before you get the machine loaded.
The dryer runs for only 20 min. (1.00) so you'll need more than a dollar just for drying.
On the way home they had their $20. laundry bag special. But those paper bags they supply are small.
I did laundry several times and didn't find the laundry rooms terribly busy.

indeed, platimun members get those free bottles of free booze and free laundry and dry cleaning. Mind you it may take two days to get your stuff back but it is free.
Laundry room is always busy. When you put your quarters into the washing machine it automatically put the soap in for you (nice).

Sorry, you are mistaken!! Elite members get free laundry and dry cleaning and the Minibar set-up, not Platinum. Also if you mark the laundry "Pronto", you wil get it back the next day.
Jim..

Yes.... free laundry is reserved for the Elite members on Princess not Platinum. Check out the Princess website under membership benefits. It outlines the levels and benefits.

Quarters weigh a lot, so we don't like to pack them. Front desk and casino are also possible sources of quarters. (We've used the self serve laundry on at least three different lines and I can't keep them straight in my head.) Another good tip is this: try to figure out when every one will be doing their laundry and pick another time! For example mid-day the first day at sea on the way home after the Islands will be packed -- early in the morning or in the evening the next day not so bad. 8)
Bon Voyage :!: :D

Very good advice. We also wait and pick and choose our time and have never had to wait on any of our 13 Princess cruises.

We try to take quarters with us because the change machines in the laundry room seem to sense how far I will have to walk to get change for a few dollars and the odds of the change machine working when I need it, are inversely proportional to the length of the walk back to the purser' office to get change!!
