Free = no way.

Pay = 90% no way.

If it is a really undersold cruise, you might have a chance of paying for an upgrade. Just about all cruises are booked solid. On one of our cruises (Med and transatlantic crossing on the Grand), there were a lot of open cabins. Other than that, the others were full.

in todays crusing market the vast majorty of ships sell-out. If you want an upgrade from your current accomodations, have your TA call now and find out if there is space and how much.
If you booked a cabin catagory guarantee your chances of getting a free upgrade would be better than if you have an assigned cabin

IT NEVER happens.
I even wrote them as a many time travelor with Princess saying I thought that was to happen and when it didn;'t happen on a ship i KNEW was not full I had my answer.
Buy what you want or forget thinking you will ever get an upgrade.

Linda do you mean it almost never happens for free...because I don't mind paying. I was wondering if the ship was not full if the cruise line offered upgrades for a $$ amount at the pier. Thanks!

We have tried upgrading at the pier or after we board and have had no luck. As one poster mentioned your best chance for a free upgrade is to take a guaranteed cabin. The one very important thing to keep in mind that you must be sure you are satisfied with your level of cabin that you pick and don't care where your cabin location is on the ship. That said, I have had better luck than most and have been upgraded several times, for free, on Princess cruises. I have also seen several cabins that remained empty for the whole cruise while "The ship is completely sold out, no cabin changes" sign remained in front of the pursers desk. I did out fox myself once and booked a GTY inside cabin, thinking I would be upgraded to at least an outside, but no luck, zilch no upgrade at all! It was no big deal to me but you should be sure that you will be happy if you decide to go with a GTY level cabin.

You or your TA can also call Celebrity and tell them that you are willing to accept an upgrade if one is available. Going this way you will at least get the cabin that you have selected or you may get an upgrade, if the upgrade ferry comes to visit you.

Slim to none, but it dosen't hurt to try. Most lines, as mentioned are going out just about full. What cabins are usually available will be lower decks, inside as these are least likely to sell.

Default Upgrades

I've never heard of anyone upgrading their stateroom at check-in on any cruise line. As for empty rooms, going out of San Juan, some cruise lines give great discounts to the local population to fill up the ship!

Your travel agent would be the only one who could help prior to final payment if there was any chance of an upgrade.
