Default HOW MUCH WILL PRINCESS CHARGE TO MY CREDIT CARD AT CHECK IN?

When I check in for my cruise, how much will Princess charge to my credit card in anticipation of on-board charges, etc.?

Is there a standard amount?

Does it vary by ship or itinerary?

No cruise line actually "charges " anything to your Credit Card. Some lines request a reserve, but it varies by cruise line. That's one of those "well kept secrets" and who really knows!

The importance of knowing comes in when you consider that I will be using the card for purchases at the various ports of call we visit. It would help to know how much available credit I will have on my card once I check in for my cruise.

Any suggestions?

Every day you and your cabin mate (if on the same credit card) will be charged the gratutity plus any special beverages that you consume. It's up to you to budget what you'll spend every day and keep track of it. If you wish you can go to the purser's desk every day and get a print out of what's been charged to your account which you will be responsible for at the end of the trip. If you buy anything at the ship shops that, too, will be added to the account.

We did have an experience earlier this year where the card we registered had been put on hold by our CC company due to a 'suspicious pattern of use' - my wife's PAYG cell phone had expired & we had used the CC to try & top it up 5 times in one day before giving up on the phone company's website.

We had a call from the CC company to check we still had the card & they checked the last 10 items with us, 5 of which were from Carnival Corp, which confused us . The reception said it was standard practice to 'reserve' the funds & not to worry. Sure enough by the time the CC bill arrived, all of these items had disappeared & be repleaced with one total figure for the cruise.

Hope this insight through personal experience re-assures you that you will be fine.

When you pay by credit card the cruise line will put a "reserve" on your card for around $250/day. Make sure you have an available balance to cover this reserve.

A reserve is not an actual charge but it "holds" this amount on your credit card for that period so no other charges can use it.

The actual charges will be the same as CruiseNut explained.

Take care,
Mike

$250/ day???!!! You have to be kidding! That is $2500 for a 10 day cruise! That is close to the cost of the cruise fare itself, and would cover on HECK of a lot of drinking and specialty restaurant eating!!

Am I going to spend $250/ day on booze and specialty restaurants...NO And I would not expect the Princess Cruises to think that I would either!!

It has to be more reasonable than this!![/i]

Default Mike ?

Do you know if the the cruise company ask for a reservation of $250 on a daily basis, then release back any underspend on that amount before asking for the next day's reservation, or ask for it all in one go.
As that certainly doesn't reflect the experience that we had. The amounts read back by our CC company were in the order of £50, $34, $62, and so on. Definitely not $2500, nor $250, $250, $250m $250 etc.

Alan.

I thought they put an initial reserve of $250 on the card. Then, when you got close to that amount in charges, they requested another reserve. I know they didn't hold $2500 for a 10 day cruise because the card I used only had a $2000 limit.

That is correct.

If folks just read the link to the other thread, it is all explained there.

they don't charge anything to your card until you start buying things on board and have to sign for them, at that point they will charge you.
Drinks are more than the price you read as they add a tip or tax or something about 15% for to whatever you thought it would cost.

Check you bill daily if you are signing for your bar drinks, shopping, etc.
Otherwise at the end of the cruise you will get pages with lots of numbers and your memory will nto recall all that you sent. Easier to glance at a copy of your bill every other day-get it from the front desk.

Can't answer for Princess . HAL is going to put a hold of
$1700 on our cabin for a 14 day cruise in Aug.
On RCL in Jan 08 we only had a $500/week hold.
They probably tell you how much when you don your online vhevkin.
