Airline removes life vests to save weight, fuel

Canadian carrier to use seat cushions as flotation devices, spokesman says

updated 1 hour, 11 minutes ago
TORONTO - Air Canada's regional carrier Jazz is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel.

Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stuart said Thursday that government regulations set by Transport Canada allow airlines to use floatation devices instead of life vests provided the planes remain within 50 nautical miles of shore.

Safety cards in the seat pockets of Jazz aircraft now direct passengers to use the seat cushions as floatation devices.

Well, I'm thinking that it just doesnt really matter, I'm not sure of the actual statistic's but I dont think too many people ever survive impact and get use out of the life jacket!

I know that if I am ever unlucky enough to be in a plane crash, chances are I will be using my seat cushion as a toilet LOL

Reminds me of the US airline announcement a few years back which announced that "in the event of landing on water, the seat cushions could be used as flotation devices, and if used as such could be kept as a souvenir of your flight". You gotta love some people's sense of humor.

Personally I would prefer to see the life jackets replaced with parachutes LOL

On a more setious note, I wonder if Jazz is heading the way of fellow Canadian airline Zoom who suspended operations last night due to the escalating fuel costs. http://www.flyzoom.com/

I sure hope not Kanda, living in central canada our air service is very limited as it is the only airlines out of Regina are West Jet, Air Canada(Jazz) and once daily Northwest to Minneapolis.
