We are headed out on our first cruise in December on the Crown Princess ship to the Eastern Caribbean for a 7 night cruise. We need to stay in touch with family and I have learned that my regular verizon cell phone used here in the U.S. will not work.
I have read some about renting an international cell phone. Is this the best option? If so, with what company? If it is not the best recommendation, what is a better option?
AT&T or any provider that uses a GSM phone service.

Check with your carrier. Some treat certain parts of the Caribbean just like the US or have reasonable rates. Verizon will be able to tell you. They have at least one phone that is capable of taking GSM SIMs as well as working on their network - this will allow you to call from outside the US on their network. You need to call your carrier in advance and make sure that they enable international roaming. Also, if you have had your phone for more than 3 months and it is GSM capable you can ask them for the unlock code which will enable you to purchase a prepaid SIM Card when you arrive for the local carrier. The down side of this is that you will have a local number for the country that you bought the card in so not much use for incoming calls unless you call first and give out your temporary number.
Just got off Crown Princess Eastern route and my cell phone worked about 3/4 of the time. Of course it was international roming! I have AT&T. But my husbands didn't work at all. So make sure you call the cell phone company and talk to them before you go.
