Default Nickel and dime to death?

On our last cruise with Princess, we felt we were "nickel and dimed" for things like soft drinks, ice cream and email. I know others that were frustrated as well. We'd rather pay an extra $100 per passenger and not have to deal with these costs. Any thoughts??

Well, you asked so here goes:
I'd rather see it stay like it is. Lots of folks don't use the shipboard internet, etc. and no need for those that don't to fund those who do.
Re/ cokes, ice cream, same thing. Those who don't partake save their money--those who want it pay --that's as fair as you can get.
I don't consider the cost of these items as "nickel and dimeing "---
It's just business--I've never been pressured to buy anything on any cruise line. If you don't want to buy something, just politely say no. They won't
pull out the rubber hose and start beating you with it !!

I agree with Ron,
I use the internet, but no cokes/ice cream. I think you should just pay for what you use.

Thanks for the input. I guess we were spoiled in years past. We use to be able to use the ice cream machine at will and soft drinks were free.....now I'm really sounding old! My son-in-law loved the ice cream machine!

Your point well taken.

I also agree with the 'user fee'.

My guess is the cruise lines are trying to keep cost in perspective. Some of us want more, and are willing to pay for it. Some of us want the 'all inclusive'.

I would like it all for free and not have to worry about it, but there is a business to be run.

It is my belief the lines are trying to provide the best for everyone according to their preferences. I think they are doing a great job trying to satisfy everyone's needs, let the PAX pick and choose.

I may be wrong...and usually am.

Yes...I understand the business perspective too. I think we were spoiled by previous cruises that had "free" ice cream etc. Bottom line - we're thankful we can afford to cruise...many cannot.

We too are very mindful of the fact that a lot of folks are hurting and can't cruise. We're going in a few weeks and right now it appears that we will get back $ 189.00 in fuel surcharges so that's a nice bonus. That'll help with the tips !!

42 cruisers
I too remember the free ice cream and I think that was a nice touch that should remain. Premium ice cream is another matter, but soft serve? FREE!!

We rarely drink sodas or eat ice cream between meals, and we get an internet package free because we're platinum members. I'd rather pay for extras as we want them and keep it as it is.

I agree. And the crew was rude. I had trouble with the computer I was useing and the man working there would not get off his computer to help me, another passenger did.
They kept running out of ice and tea at the buffet, and you really needed something to help choke down that awful crap they called food.

I don't eat ice cream and don't want my fare to go up to make it free.
P.S. IMO The crew are not rude and the food is not crap.

Bob emy,

You are among the most negative persons who have ever posted here. You keep saying the crew were rude, and the food was "crap." (On I think at least three different threads now) Do you not find it strange that large numbers of highly experienced cruisers have had the opposite experience?

Maybe it's just us huh?

I would seem that perhaps they (Bob emy) just need to try a different cruise line and get a few different experiences , then come back and share some positives. They even wrote:

Rather than mocking anyone for making "first timer mistakes" people need to understand there's many people who don't research for info on their cruises before they go.

Of course, it'd difficult to understand, once we see how easily they find the cruise info sites after their cruise to vent. I understand the frustrations of those who did research, or are a bit more experienced cruisers, but no need to be rude.

Unlike Phil and Liz, I don't think it's a case of choosing the wrong cruise line, I think it's a case of going in with too little information.

I wrote a blog a while back that I think applies....

We were all first time cruisers, and walked around asborbing it all like sponges...For some, the cruise line chosen is not the best fit....things assumed by newbies, are not as expected sometimes..I have always said, "on each cruise, we learn things we will bring to our next cruise."

So..next time, when someone researchs their next cruise, armed with knowledge from their past cruise, imput from Cruisemates, & with many questions asked, we can hope the next time is the best time

Your blog piece is very good, but this has nothing whatever to do with research Kuki. The folks say repeatedly, on three different threads, that Princess crew are rude and that Princess food is 'crap.' Now that is rude. And it has not been my experience at all. Has it been yours?

Makes one wonder if there is some sort of an agenda going on here. Or if maybe they were just plain terribly unlucky.

I think there was a certain degree of hyperbole in the posts in question. I believe that they made some rookie errors and it bit them. My wife and I, through researching this site realized that the best tactic at the buffet is to find a table have one of the couple sit at it while the other gets their food. Cuts down on the cold and tasteless whine we heard. I still find it hard to believe when they saw thier servers serve food to the other table that got there later that they chose to leave rather than flag down the waiter and find out what is amiss. From the tone and drama of the posts here, I believe that the ensuing scene at the Purser's desk lessened thier chances of rectification. Even if they had been wrongly told they needed reservations for anytime, then why didn't they immediately try to make them?

Inquiring minds want to know. There are too many holes in the story.

In case you think I am a Princess cheerleader, or for any other line, just read my review on the Monarch of the Seas which contains a bit of critical commentary on the cruise and some trends in cost cutting.

We too don't like the "nickel and dime" approach being taken by some of the crusie lines, including Princess. Couple that with cut backs in staff and price increases and one wonders how long the crusie lines will be able to fill their ships. We have found ways though to offset some of those nickle and dime cost. Princess had free ice cream for one our each afternoon. Internet was free at some port locations and we brought back a six pack of Cokes at the next port. Now all of this is really "nickle and dime" stuff. It's not the money but rather the challange the cruise line gives me to find ways to cut them out of another nickel and dime.

Bill, the drastic decrease in the price of fuel should ease the squeeze a bit, at least for a while. but the over all terrible economy will cut down substantially on the number of people willing to spend on a cruise and increase the competition for fewer passengers.

It may stop the decline in the quality of food. Or, it may lead to such cut throat competition that it will increase the nickel and dime syndrome. Who knows?

OK, to add a little fuel to the fire, we were just on the Emerald & I thought their free ice cream has declined tremendously. Maybe it's just me but they seem to have a new additive that makes it almost tasteless. Possibly to drive more people to purchase the other stuff?
See what you think on you next cruise.
BTW- I haven't heard [/b]anyone else complain about it so it may well be only me who thinks so.
