Can anyone tell us from cruising on Carribean Princess--is the gratuity for bartenders added to your bill automatically? We've heard different things about tipping bartenders. Also, if you want to distribute the gratuity yourself to the people with whom you have contact, is there a customary amount per day? For example, your cabin steward---tip each day or at the end of the cruise. Any suggestions?
15% is automatically added to all drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol).
The tips for the cabin steward and food service folks are included in the auto tipping. If you want to give more to a person, put it in an envelop and give it to them.
If you prefer to tip yourself, you can stop the auto tipping.
SS Norway (12 times) '85 - '97; Radiance OS 06/01; Island Princess 11/04, Grand Princess 11/04/05, Golden Princess 7/21/06, Golden Princess 2/24/07, Explorer of the Seas 12/23/07, Island Princess 11/15/08
The tips for the bartenders are on the receipt you sign but there is a place to add more if you want. If you want to tip everyone personally, you would have to go to the Customer Service desk and ask to have the auto tips taken off, get envelopes and they are usually passed out the last night of the cruise, no need to tip daily.

Family and I did a 25 day cruise on the Diamond Princess in Jan09 and we found that even though the wait staff add to the alcohol drinks tab a 15% tip, that if you have the soda card - service was poor to say the least
we didnt realise till about day 20 that it was because they saw no tips from this so started giving tips to ALL staff and service turned around remarkably!!
The service is great on the ship - but it seems as times are getting tougher and travelling is curtailing..that the service is slipping.
There is a automatic gratuity added to your bill daily for many of the service people, but not bar tenders. You may find that there is an automatic tip added to your beverage bill so check for that before you sign.
I would suggest that you go to the front desk and ask specifically who is in included in the billed gratuity so you know what to expect. We often give and additional tip to our room steward if he/she has done an excellent job.
Don't be misled by the last poster, there is ALWAYS a 15% tip added to your beverage bill - they may not write it in but it will definitely show up on your bill when you check your statement.
In fact, on the last day I once bought a cute plastic glass that lit up ... and they charged 15% for the EMPTY glass!!!
Wow, they charged a gratuity for the glass? Yikes....Yes, there is always a 15% gratuity. Sometimes, if we're in the theater and order a drink before / during the show, and the service is exceptionally good, we will tip over and above the 15%.
