Default Are Princess staff sorry on all ships?

On our last TransAtlantic cruise on the Sea Princess we felt the ship was short of staff in many area's and overall attitude of not caring by staff.
After reading many reviews about the same attitude on the Diamond and Grand is seems to be an issue on many of the fleet.
I like the Princess ships themselves, but now after 15 cruises with them I am really concerned about the "attitude" that seems to be on many of the Princess fleet.

Have others experienced this recent trend on Princess?

If they are understaffed - it can certainly be disheartening to the rest of the crew. Like any other work place when your reduce staff but not overall workload it does not make those left to pull the weight of others very happy.

Last cruise I did was on Star Princess to Alaska last summer, glad to report, I didn't find that to be the case at all. The usual wonderful staff, happy and friendly...

Cruised many times with Princess and other than one day after we rocked all night in a Beaufort 11 storm, we have always had wonderful service.

In the case of that Beaufort 11 (one below hurricane) the poor room steward had be tossed all night from her bunk to the ceiling. We could tell that she was quite ill from the effects and had not slept. We told her to forget doing our room up for the day and to rest and recover.

Hi Cookie, I would be interested to know more about the particular cruise that you were on as we did a transatlantic on Sea Princess Last August/September from Southampton to the Shetlands, the Faroes, Norway, Iceland, Greenland (missing St. John s) and into NY.

On the August cruise, the crew were always very friendly & chatty ( in line with our previous Princess cruises ) and of course always willing to help us in any way they could. The various stewards along our corridor always had a cheery 'hello' and 'how are you' as we passed.

Were there any areas in particular which seemed short staffed? we were freedom dining, so guess it may have been the fixed sitting restaurant.

Please let us know, so that we are prepared for any fall off in service levels before we cruise with Princess again.

Thanks,
Alan.

I think people can experience a total disconnect, when talking about this subject..people on the same cruise, can have such totally different experiences, and just wonder, did we sail the same ship? It has happened to me, with service on a line that touted the best of the best..we experienced nothing close to the best....

I do think, it might be time to give another line a try..Give Princess a rest, experience some others, and the revist Princess, with maybe a new ship, in a few years....good luck...

We just returned from 2 back to backs on the Island Princess to the Panama Canal and I found the service to be impeccable as usual. I cannot recall passing any member of the crew without them smiling and saying good morning to us.
I truly think that some people take pleasure in trying to find something to complain about. Relax and enjoy yourself.

I just got back from a cruise on another line and it was great. I think alot of the time you get what you give. I noticed some in my cabin area not happy with some of the service but I did not experience any problem.
I think if you expect them to be a servant then I think you tend to treat them like that. I always look at them as someone on the cruise that can help me have a good time and to help me with onboard and shore info.
I could not do their job and have never really noticed any outward attitude towards me. Maybe just a "it's been a long day" attitude. We have all had those.
I have been on Carnival and Princess and both have been great so far.

After 4 Royal Caribbean cruises we decided to give Princess a try. We were on the Caribbean Princess April 5-12, 2009 and had the same impression for a majority of the staff (but not all).
I have a theory why.......gratuities are added automatically and there is not a user friendly process to add more.
With Royal Caribbean.....when your grat is added automatically they still give you an envelope you can present to staff.
On Princess I felt like the staff knew they had your gratuity.....knew they weren't getting any extra.....and behaved accordingly. Disappointing.

We have done 15 cruises, 9 of which were on Princess. In 2008 and 2009 we sailed the Diamond, first to Hawaii R/T LA and this year Auckland/Sydney.

We did not have, nor have we ever had, problems with the Princess staff. That's one reason cruise 16 is also on Princess.

However, I also don't expect the staff to grovel at my feet whenever they see me. Sometimes I think it's expectations that get in the way of our views of things, rather than what actually happened.

I'm sure that a number of people have had bad experiences on Princess as well as any other cruise ship, including the most expensive ones. We had staff on Princess, and other cruise lines, that were less enthusiastic than others, but that does not mean they did not do a good job for us. In addition, I think they are entitled to have a bad once in a while. I would too if I had to work the days and hours that they do.

We just returned from our cruise on the Star Princess, and we found the crew and staff great as always.

If one ship is understaffed, then that would leave the rest of the crew to pick up the load, but I still believe they are there to help you have a great time, and so doing they also have fun.

On our 14 day caribbean collection cruise I thought the service was impeccable, I'd highly recommend them. I however prefer a friendly atmosphere with staff and not one where I'm "above them" like some.

Errrrrr, you use the same user-Friendly way to add additional money as on Royal, you hand them the extra tip in person!

Their attitude may reflect the fact that they don`t get all of their tips.
A discussion with Daniel Parton the the Grand revealed that Princess holds back an administrative fee from the tips. `Times are tough`said Daniel.... èvery on has to chip in`.

After 3 cruises on Carnival Glory, my husband and I decided to try Crown Princess. The attitude of the majority of the crew was less than desirable, except our room steward and one bartender. The dining room wait staff was fantastic.

Everyone else though? Couldn't even be bothered to make eye contact with passengers.

We sailed on Golden Princess last spring and experienced rudeness from one server when we asked for tea instead of coffee (at the afternoon tea). One person at the front desk was very abrupt but all the others were pleasant. We also had some problems in the cabin which the steward said he would get repaired but we ended up having to call the front desk ourselves to get it resolved.

We were surprised though as Princess has a good reputation and we have never experienced this on any other cruise line.

Anyway, it wasn't major and it certainly didn't ruin our good time.

I have sailed on 14 Princess cruises and have never experienced any real problem. The one thing to keep in mind that on any one cruise you will only come in contact with a handful of employees out of 1,500 or so workers. While I agree that there is no excuse for rudeness, I am sure that all cruise lines have a few that are either not suited for working with the public or they are just having a bad day.

I will be sailing on Princess for two weeks this month and I will report what I find on my cruise.

Default RUDENESS

Our first experience on the Pacific Princess was incredible..one of the things is I found the rudest Purser ever in 25 years of cruising. First every time I called and asked to be connected to my friends cabin I had to repeat and spell the name.. which is as easy as Smith...I really don't believe he spoke or understood english well.. Then there was an incident with my missing watch...I called and received the same person from the pool deck and told him I was coming down and wanted the Head of security there immediately...Now, it takes a few minutes to get from the 9th deck to the 4th..with slow elevators.. When I got there no Security Officer.. I again demanded he call the Security Officer IMMEDIATELY.. he told me "not to talk to him that way"... For two days I had been looking for my watch knowing it had been turned it and where and kept asking the young man. The problem is that Princess people are brand loyal and refuse to see anything wrong with their beloved Princess ships.. The motto of Celebrity is X for Excellence... and that I can believe.. it certainly isn't with the ship we were on

Default The old dog only bites once...

They say. We'll never cruise Princess again. Just returned from a 2-week Amazon cruise on the Pacific Princess.

From the ride from the Airport to the ship, with a horribly judgmental homophobic bus guide (a Princess transfer) to the last day on the ship, we've never experienced such awful service. I work in HR for a hospitality firm in SF and I'll be honest, wouldn't hire any of the crew (based on their serivce) to work for us. To us, it seemed as if it was "all about Princess" not about the passenger. They were doing us a favor by letting us board their ship.

The ship itself was nice, but very worn. Our mini-suite was comperable to a Sky Suite on Celebrity, but without any special amenities. Truthfully, we get more from a Concierge Class cabin on Celebrity. Not only that, after cruising with Celebrity for years, it took trying one Princess cruise to remind us of how stellar Celebrity's customer service really is.

Default Princess Staff

I just read another very negitive review of the staff on the Grand Princess.(on another website) The cruiser was doing a TransAtlantic and indicated they would not sail her agian.
This staff issue does seem to be happening on a regular basis on Princess(on certain ships).
The last thing I want to do is spend my vacation $$ on a ship with a staff that could care less about about providing good service.
Staff attitude issues have not happened on other cruiselines that I have tried.

I've never experienced anything but OUTSTANDING service, food, and entertainment on any, of the many cruises I've done with Princess. So sorry some of you are disappointed, but that makes my selection of cabins greater. That's why there are many lines out there. We all have a choice.

Been on the CROWN twice and the Ruby once with the Sapphire coming in March 2010. We have ALWAYS had excellent service. I am NEVER demanding and expect nothing xtra. HOWEVER having been on Princess a few times and Carnival a few more times, I know these people make NO $$$. I usually just inform my cabin steward to take care of my wife and 9 year old daughter, and I always leave extra above and beyond.

My service has always been GREAT, but then maybe they somehow know I belong to the "Princess family" and I get better treatment, but I doubt it!

I have been told by both officers and crew that most of the crew members in positions that are compensated by tips shun the Sea Princess because so many passengers remove the auto tip.I have not heard this on any other Princess trip.I have been on Sea 4 times for a total of 49 nights.

Hello all,

I just returned from a back to back cruise to Alaska on the Island Princess.
After reading a few negative opinions, I have to admit that I was a little more observant than usual. Since this was my fourth cruise on this particular ship, I was astounded at how the ship had been maintained. The ship condition was as good as one would expect from brand new ship. There were even bridge lessons and duplicate bridge games during our cruise. Many other lines, unless it is a TA crossing, have dropped this activity due to budget cuts. The activities were many and varied, even with two weeks onboard; I was unable to do everything that I would have liked to have done.

The food and service were also way above the normal standard for mainstream or premium cruise lines. All of the staff that I came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. Our room steward was probably the best we have ever had on any cruise. She even remembered my name and would always greet me, by name, whenever we would happen to meet on the ship.

For my cruise, Princess even offered an upgrade to elite status for both cruises. I enjoy sailing with a company that proves every cruise that they want and appreciate my business. For me, having tried several other cruise lines, I will continue to sail with Princess.

Happy sailing to all.

Debra

As many times as I cruise Princess, I have always found the staff on to be fabulous! Better than any other cruiseline. I cruised on NCL with a friend a year ago, and the staff/service was lousey! It was the California-to-Mexico cruise and I was told by other shipmates that some cruises (especially the Calif-to-Mexico) are meant to train new staff. NCL was quite disappointing. I wrote them and they did not respond.

Gotta share this: On NCL last February: I was accused of 'hoarding' half-n-half, by my room steward, because I asked for more half-n-half (we had a coffee pot in the room). I again asked for more a couple days later, and a ship official came down to my room to talk to me. They were rude and accusatory. Between the two of us who shared the room, we drank more than two cups of coffee a day each and needed more than 4 creamers. The food on good on NCL - that's about all the good I can say about that cruise and, we had a lot of fun despite several experiences similar to what I just shared! I love Princess.

I was on one of those training crew cruises. It was terrible. This was the ships' last carribean cruise and was being re-flaged USA for Hawaii. I was told they had to hire USA workers. They acted like they didn't want to be there. They actually ran out of food to serve. I believe that was my last NCL cruise..It has been RCL and Princess and one party carnival! I'm too old for Carnival!
