This is why I started to cruise......

I can vividly remember back in the 70's, the pilot episode of The Love Boat...I grabbed a blanket, sat on the couch, turned off the lights, and watched this new,[ new to me anyway] thing, called cruising...I was in love!

Time passes, its' now the ealy 90's, and I am watching Love Boat reruns every night....I was older, had more money, and Carnival was all over the tv, with catchy commercials and I decided, I needed to try this!

I did, and I was hooked....Literally though, the series got me wanting to cruise...For a while in the olden days of my computer, I even had the theme song, as my computer turned on......love, exciting and new, come aboard, we're expecting you...the looooove boat......la lalal la:)

So, what, or who, got you hooked, and your first ship? make mine the Carnival Celebration.......

I'm with you there Trip, also a vivid Love Boat watcher way back then. I also remember the cabins on the show being huge, what a shock to actually see a real one, LOL.

Trip February 28th, 2010 07:41 PM

Soooo spacious, we have to laugh...and they were always so dressed, even by the pool..of course the elders who co~starred, must have had no bathing suits written in to their contracts:)

Another thing was, everyones problems were wrapped up in an hour, and, there was always a big moon over the ocean, in the deck shots at night...

I also loved the Love Boat! My dear parent's cruised with their best friends on the Norway. At that time there was no way I could afford to cruise.

In 2002 we were invited on a cruise that was set up by DH's company. It was supposed to be for salesmen, but someone canceled and we were on board :D! We had an oceanview cabin on the Inspiration and thought we were in heaven!

We were absolutely hooked!

I look back at some of the pictures from my parent's cruise's and they're so funny! Mother and her friend were wearing dressy skirts, blouses and carrying big purses just to sit on the Lido deck! They wouldn't have been caught dead in shorts  .

Ahhhh - Love Boat & Fantasy Island: the shows we used to stay home for on a Friday night!;)

What got me hooked on cruising were the sounds and smells of being out on the open ocean. That sea / salty smell when the ship is really moving, watching teh spray come up. So relaxing!!!! Also, the feel of the ship moving, especially comforting at night when trying to sleep.

My 1st cruise was in the early 1980's on the Carnival "Carnivale" - and back in those times it was a real "fun" ship. Tons of young folks drinking, drinking, and drinking!!! And back then men wore a suit and tie every nignt, and ladies almost always wore a dress at dinner.

If I recall, the prices back then were way up there. I sailed on the Home Lines cruise ship "Homeric" from NY to Bermuda in 1986 - the price was $900 per person for an inside cabin on the lowest level.

All these years later and I'm still cruising!!!!! :-)

Remake

I'm really surprised they have not done a remake of that series.
Think about it, half naked people going to exotic places.:p
How long was Baywatch on and they were in the same place every week!

I would watch and if the plots were any good I might even turn the sound on!

They did make a remake of that show with I think Robert Urich as the Captain...it bombed I believe.
Personally I wasn't a fan of the show. My parents cruised a lot and one day called that they got a deal and were going to treat us to a Mexican riviera cruise with them. I was pretty sure we'd like it since my wife and I both love the ocean. I was a bit concerned about getting sea-sick however since I'd gotten ill on sailboats. But I'd figured (correctly) that there's a big difference between a sail boat and a ship where the motion was concerned. I've never had motion problems fortunately, even when seas have gotten pretty choppy. On our first full day I sat aft with my feet on a rail and realized that I'd never been so relaxed in my life....EVER. It was like a drug. And time slowed down...until we were on that last sea day heading home of course. I was hooked big time and on future cruises the same feelings hit me.....just wonderful.

The remake with Robert Urich was short lived, and filmed on the Sun Princess.

I've only been on a total of 5 cruises...not nearly enough. And I never ran into Charo and wasn't she on every original love boat episode as a passenger? :^)

Well I guess we are showing our age, but my wife and I remember watching Love Boat too. Then in 1973 We were on a trip to San Francisco and as we were walking down the Embarcadero, the original Princess Love Boat was sailing. You could walk right up to the dock then. There was music and confetti streamers and happy people out on the deck with drinks. A blast form the Ship's whistle and they were away. We thought it was the most romantic thing in the world. We vowed that as soon as we could afford it, we would become cruisers too! Some 14 cruises later, that have taken us all over the world, we still think its the most romantic thing in the world. And the next one is only a month away now!:D

Casting would be key! A good soundtrack, exotic locations with babes and studs in skimpy bathing suits.
As I said before look at Baywatch. Skin sells....
How could you miss??? Uh, make Robert Urich the captain.....

Just for the record I would like to apply for the job of location scout!!! :p

Anybody want to take a shot a casting?

I watched the Love Boat and never gave it a thought. Then when I got married I felt ripped off with the coast of travel. Then I saw an ad for a cruise out of Puerto Rico. It was on the World Rennisance by Costa. That was 1982. I now have 20 on Princess alone. We loved leaving out of San Juan and the Love Boat theme would be blasting as we left the harbour past the fort. They do not play it anymore but it was what made memories for us. I still watch reruns when I find them on the
TV. We will sail on Princess 3 times this year! Just can't get enough cruising!

For many faded Hollywood stars, The Love Boat, was a way to be seen again, and, many crusied many times...Ceasar Romaro, Carol Channing/ The cast of Laugh In,made many appearances too...It was fun to see who was going to walk onboard....

A bit of trivia...I used to wait to see what female star walked onboard carrying this Gucci square luggage case....if they gave frequent cruise miles, this item would have cruised free forever:)

DeepSpace March 14th, 2010 03:46 AM

Yes the "Love Boat" started people thinking this is a great way to vacation. I use the watch that show and the re-runs, and saying someday, I am going to sail on a cruise ship. The ony way to go.
