Default Grenada & Bonair Ports

Hi all,

I'm sailing on the Sea Princess 5-1-10 and I was wondering if anyone had info on Grenada and Bonair? I'm mostly asking about if there are things to do with out booking an excursion through the ship. Any shopping close to the pier? Are the taxi's safe?

Thanks in advance!

I have not visited either of these ports but I suggest you do a "Search" on "Grenada Bonaire" and you will come up with a number of posts and reviews that talk about these ports.

The Search function is in the blue bar at the top of all Message Board pages.

Also: I hope other readers will jump into this thread!!

Take care,
Mike

The big thing about Bonaire is the snorkeling, which is supposed to be the best!

I loved Grenada, it is such an interesting island. When we got off the ship, we were accosted by the most aggresive cab drivers I have ever seen, I almost got back on the tender, but so glad we didn't. I would go back in a heartbeat

Grand Anse Beach is always in the top 10 beautiful beaches, and rightly so, our tour stopped there for while, as well as a nutmeg factory in the hills. The wonderful market I had seen so many times on tv travel shows, was closed that day The traffic around the port was beastly.. back then with no emissions laws, we got stuck behind trucks, that were smokin! A couple of years ago, the island was devistated by hurricanes, I hope they fully recovered.....enjoy!

Thanks Mike & Trip, I will check the web for more info. I saw a few pics online, and it looks fabulous. I remember they had some civil unrest back in the early 80's, but other than that I had never heard of it.

Thanks Lisa, do you know if you can buy spices there to take home? Will customs allow that? I saw an excursion for the spice tour that sounded fun.

We visited both ports on the Crown Princess last year and there is plenty to see within walking distance in each. On Grenada you can walk up the hill and see the hurricane damage to the Episcopal cathedral there. There will also be short tours offered in each port as well. Bonaire is Dutch and reminds you of Aruba or St. Maarten in that regard. It is very secure. We did not take a taxi.

Thanks for the info - sometimes I like to get off the ship and just wonder - not have any thing solid planned. I'm glad there is plenty to see without actually being on a tour.

Grenada just take the local bus they are like minivans, just tell the guy where you want to they will let you know if that is on their route...fares are suppose to be 2.50 per zone but tourists get charged more so check the price first

I guess we got lucky in Grenada (Jan. 08). Six of us hired a minivan for 4 hour tour ($40each). Most mild mannered guide ever. Beware when visiting St. George's (they say to see the monkeys and take photos from mid-way up the mountain). It is illegaly to charge a fee for using bathrooms. Howver, it's $3 to enter the building (where the bathrooms are).

Bonnair - The dock is within a 5 minute wal of shopping/ dining. We spent the day walking the breakwall, had lunch and enjoying the scenary.

Grenada has the most beautiful harbor! Just be careful,as they drive on the other side there, and it can be an issue..there was like a cross walk monitor there, when we were there We had a wonderful tour, after another cruiser negotiated for our group...the drivers there are a tough bunch..we loved it there..

Spice Island Inn is where our guide dropped us off to enjoy the most glorious of beaches...
