Default Internet Service

Last cruise was in 2003 and the internet was not a way of live for me then. Must admit, with work like it is today, it is better to be able to stay in touch. Does Princess offer a package of some type and can you find laptop hotspots on shore. We are cruising New York to Quebec in September, better to ask the questions now than pay the bill later.

My Blackberry did not always work (email/data) in Alberta last year, only in the major cities or at most airports; not all. Maybe I should just toss it in the safe and just kick back. Better yet, over the side may work better.

I would just deep six the Blackberry ( also called Crackberry by some users)
Just use on board internet or an internet cafe on shore (cheapest)

Most of the ships now have bow to stern wi fi access. They sell packages of varying amounts of time. If you buy a package it should cost you around $.45 cents a minute.

If you're on your laptop you can write mail off-line, and just send on to send. And just download your mail, and read it off-line.

Quackberry term is a correct one, I fell into it at first. Now it is just another work tool, just attached to my hip.

Thanks for the outline reading and writing, never tried that. At home a number of eating joints have free wifi, not sure what Canada has. The areas I mainly travel (other than airports) are lucky to have cellphone service up north in the bush.

Will look into a package of some type once we get on the cruise or can you book it ahead of time? Have not read about it in my Cruise Answer Book - yet.

If you go a the websites for the main provoders they usually have maps
that give general coverage info

Telus Network

Canada: 3G coverage*|* 3G*|* Coverage and Travelling*|* Support*|* TELUS Mobility

Rogers

http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless_network#

Bell Canada

Coverage and Travel- bell.ca

These are the major companies across Canada . There might also be
companies that are regional . These three have connections and roaming
with US major suppliers.

The Blackberry won't work onboard for Internet access and email. You will need to use Princess' Internet Cafe or your own laptop. You can buy packages of minutes. These lower the per minute rate and are a good idea if you plan on doing more than just checking email once a day. Here is the current rates:

$55 = 100 minutes
$75 = 150
$100 = 250
$175 = 500

Remember that the speeds are much slower than broadband and close (but usually a bit better) than dial-up, 56Kbps, speed.

Here is a good article about using your laptop at sea.

Tips for Internet Use on Your Cruise - Aboard the Ship

Take care,
Mike

On my last Princess cruise, last year, if you had five cruises or more, Princess offered free, the first 150 minutes per person on the Internet.

Hi Don, IMHO, I think this is the best idea (the safe, not tossing it over the side!). The only thing you might find out is that business goes on without you ! I know that my DH was surprised! (He got over it very quickly !)

Don't know, would not mind seeing it skip across the surface - then sink.
