I'm getting ready to reserve my excursions soon, and I'm torn between two tours. I definitely want to take the White Pass Railway. The two tours I'm looking at are the Yukon Expedition & White Pass Scenic Railway or the Best of Skagway tour. The primary difference is that one tour visits the Red Onion Saloon (Best of Skagway) and the visits Carabou Crossing.
Does anyone have a recommendation? If we book the Yukon Expedition & White Pass Scenic Railway, is there time in town to visit the Red Onion?
Oh, for sure you'd have time either before your excursion or after. The train ride is like 3 to 4 hours, so just plan accordingly. The town is great to walk around in, lots of shops, etc.
I went on the train tour, and saw some of the most beautiful scenery ever. If I were you I would book the train tour and just go to the Red Onion when the tour ends.

Happy cruising!!
We did the same thing. Took the train up and the van back and had plenty of time to walk around town and stop in the Red Onion for an Alaskan beer.
Oh, I loved Alaska so much more than I anticipated. I'm a hot weather person, (suffereing away here in Boston), so I was expecting the worst as far as weather and tempature goes, and I was thrilled it wasnt that cold.
That picture of the Red Onion makes me want to go back soon.
My wife and I did the bus-train trip in 2003. It was great! Took the bus up to Carcross and back down to Frazier. Then rode the train back to Skagway. We also dropped in the saloon after we got back to town.
