Depends on the size of the ship and if there are any other ships in port. We were on the HAL Noordam last month and docked at the pier away from the canal where the pontoon bridge is, whereas the Grandeur of the Seas was docked up the canal on the other side of the bridge.

Ever since they added the new dock a few years ago we've never sailed past the floating bridge any longer. Either way you can better appreciate it from walking past it on the way to town- it's a short walk.
I've never seen a cruise ship on that side of the pier, I think smaller boats travel through that area. I have been able to walk across the bridge...
They still utilize the areas past the floating bridge for some ships when they're filled at the new pier. HAL was tied up just near the floating bridge last time we were there last Nov.
We sailed past the floating bridge when we docked there on our Carnival Miracle cruise. There was also a Windstar cruise ship docked there too.
