Default Renting Cars in Hawaii

We will be on the Princess Grand going to Hawaii in October. My husband is from Hawaii so we would like to rent cars on the islands and tour on our own. Does anyone know if it is easy to rent cars at the different piers?

We rented a car in every port we visited in Hawaii. It's very easy - shop around to see who'll give you the best rate. In one port, we got a car for $25 for the day, but we didn't pay more than about $45 in any port except Oahu. We learned it's MUCH cheaper to book at the airport than anywhere else.

However, one word of caution; make sure you pre-book your rental cars ahead of time. In a couple of ports, all the cars had been reserved, so those looking to rent one were out of luck. Because we made all of our reservations ahead of time, we had no problems whatsoever.

We also took our GPS with us and it was very helpful getting us everywhere we wanted to go on every island. We're so glad we took it.

We rented a car in Maui and didn't have any problems except that it was a mad rush when getting picked up at the pier. They only took one person from each party to the car pick up point & everybody wanted to be first. My pocket GPS worked great without having to worry about where we were going.

Hi, renting cars is really easy when cruising in Hawaii, BUT, when you book, make sure that the rental company will pick you up at the pier and return you to the pier. We recently booked with Avis at Kona and ended up having to spend an extra $50 on a taxi to/from the pier to the airport.

Good point! We found that Thrifty was the only car rental company actually in the town of Kona and it's is located one block from the pier. All the rest of them are at the airport and none of them provide complimentary shuttle. So we did not have to pay the outrageous taxi fare between the pier and the airport.

But in the other ports we never had a problem with the car rental shuttles. Then again, we didn't use Hertz or Avis, so we paid less and got better service.
