Hi. Is it a good idea to purchase Euros before leaving the states? If so does anyone know of a bank that doesn't charge to exchange them? Two years ago I exchanged them at a Bank of America for no charge with an account but now they are charging $7.50. I suppose there is another $7.50 to exchange any left over Euros. Thanks.

Just wait until you arrive in Europe and head to ATM machine. Best exchange rate and lowest (if any) fees.

I'm never comfortable landing in a country without currency. I think the answer to your question would depend on where you live. Here in Vancouver I have a fantastic exchange place that doesn't charge a fee and their exchange rates are soooo much better than a bank. I buy Euros every pay when I know we're going on a trip and then use an ATM when needed in Europe. Check some of the currency exchange rate places if you live in a big city.
I would take Marc's advice. There isn't a major airport in the world that does not have a "bank" ATM.
Just use the normal caution you would use anywhere. Don't flash your cash, cover your pin when entering it and only use bank ATM's and not generic cash machines.
Take care,
Mike
