Default Explorer - Portofino's

Please tell me that Anne was wrong about the price for Portofino's going up to $20.00? That sounds way to high to be correct. I can't belive RCCL would have the gall to charge $40.00/ couple for a meal on a cruise ship. If so I say no thanks!

I agree with Scott's comment regarding the price increase in Portofino's!!
Wasn't the price just $6.00 per person prior to this? $6.00 seems very low,
but $20.00 per person is a bit on the high side. Maybe they should have
picked a more reasonable price increase somewhere in the middle.
That seems like a pretty big increase in one step. I've heard that the food
in Portofino's was very good, but still that seems like a large price increase.
Does anyone else have an opinion on this or any other information on this
price increase ??? Thanks...
P.S. We can't wait for our Explorer cruise next May !!!!

FL Cruiser: I also can't wait for my Explorer cruise. Much longer to wait then you go, we don't go until Sept 22, 2001!

Will you or anyone else out there go to Portofino's for $40.00? I really wanted to eat there at least once but not for that much. fl crusiers wrote:

Hi Scott and Fl cruisers,
I too find the price increase a bit on the steep side, going from just $6.00 to $20.00? I think they should of increased it to like 10-15, just my opinion. Not sure I'm willing to dish out $40.00 for us to try it.

Looks like we all have a bit to wait to get on Explorer, 178 days left for us, going April 21st and with everything I've been hearing about this new ship, its getting really harder to wait :-)

I also agree with everyone on this. I think the price increase is ridiculously steep! The whole idea of this vacation being "ALL INCLUSIVE" has gone!

The restaurant itself is stunning and the food and service are several steps above the norm in a cruise ship's main restaurant. The price is quite in line with the charges being made on other ships for their gourmet alternative restaurants (the CostaAtlantica, as an example, is just about the same price, including gratuity). One of the ideas at work here, as I understand it, is to limit the demand for the restaurant, which cannot nearly accommodate all on board, even once during a 7 night cruise. The charge should separate out those who really want a gourmet dining experience, with menu's that cannot be prepared in large kitchens for great numbers of people from those who have only a casual interest. This ship has many excellent dining venues open to all, night and day. No one will go hungry here.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks Ernie for your information on the prices on the other
cruise lines. I can see how the price increase would exclude
some passengers. As, for dining at Portofino's now that the
price has gone up, yes we have been planning on dining there
one evening and will still go ahead with our plans. We will just
consider it to be a special occasion and I guess $20.00 pp is not
an unusual amount to expect to pay for a special occasion.
I do agree that the price increase is too much at one time!!
It sounds like we are all anxious for our cruise dates to arrive
and I'm looking forward to reading some cruise reviews very soon!!!

Good point Jim. Sounds like Parnami's fears are justified. "Standard" dining for your cruise price but if you wish something better than "standard" we will have to pay a hefty surcharge. Had thought that Celebrity's $12 charge for the specialty restaurant was excessive; now RCL has topped that. Where does it all end Ernie?

What is going on ? Does everything have to be free. If you don't like the price don't go. You don't have to buy drinks or pictures or anything else. I think this whining is ridiculous. I know i'll get bashed by the comments but that is my opinion. Either you pay for extras or thy raise the ticket prices business is business.

Kingcruiser... You are of course entitled to your opinion here. I don't think anyone will bash you for it. I think the real complaint is the SUDDEN and HEFTY increase. I don't know how they can justfy going from $6 to $20 so quickly. I do realize that business is business. I just feel that a gradual increase may have been better accepted by passengers.

I agree with you that a smaller increase would be easier for passengers. I just worry that cruiselines will succumb to giving all these extras for free and then raise ticket prices to cover the costs, then everyone suffers. I personally would prefer the pay as you use method at least that way you can control your spending if that is you desire. Sorry if my tone seemed harsh in the previous post.

Sorry Ernie - There seems to be a trend towards separating cruise passengers (sort of like the old class system) rather than including them, and that is something I hate to see. Seems to me that there are better methods to control crowds and eliminate lines than just by charging extra. When the price for an alternative restaurant exceeds what might be considered a gratuity, then we are not far away from Star Cruises ala carte system. I would have thought that RCIhad learned their lesson from the Voyager debacle, but that Celebrity influence is still there, I guess. I must say, however, I just came off the Sovereign three night cruise and was reassured that RCI still offers a great cruise experience that includes all its passengers, rather than a select group. So there is still hope.

Kingcruiser...I am starting to see your point. I suppose it would be better to have the choice of paying for these services. Rather than be forced to pay for it through higher ticket costs. I just feel that RCI has gone about this in a very unprofessional way. They should have made better estimations on what they could or could not afford before this ship ever set sail.

your right it was bad for public relations to jump so much. I'm sailing on the EOS 11/04 we will see how much of an impact the increase will have.

Enjoy Explorer! We have heard some great things about her here. I'll be on VOS 2/25. I'm counting the days! I'll be sure to give a full report when I get back as well.
