Just got back last night. Had a great time. Before I give my recommendations, let me say that people who ask for comments and suggestions should give a little info about themselves so the responder knows the audience, as it were. Also, I have little interest in "shopping". In St. Thomas I recommend Coki Beach dive club. Their site is www.cokidive.com. They will come to the cruise dock and pick you up on arrival, if you e-mail them. This saved my family $30 in taxi fare. If you aren't a certified diver, you can do a discover scuba course with them for $50, much less than the excursion price of $99. If diving isn't your thing (why not?) then coki is a good place to snorkle as well since they feed the reef fish, the fish come quite close to shore and are easy to see. Great for kids. Snorkle gear available for rent there, and there is a restroom/changing building too. Over all, a great beach for a family morning. I would recommend going there first thing as it will probably get busier in the afternoon. There will probably be 2 other cruise ships in port with you.
In Aruba, Palm beach is really nice, no need to take an excurision, just get a taxi to go to any of the big hotels there. They do charge for the chairs and such, but it is a really nice beach with plenty of watersports available, including diving. Just make sure that you are dry and sand free before you think about getting into a taxi in Aruba. The people I met there were all very friendly. The same goes for Curacao. There I would recommend getting a taxi and going to either Princess Beach Hotel or Lion's dive hotel and just walking though their lobby to their beach. That is what my son and I did. No questions asked. There were other people there from the ship already.
Have a great trip
My 14 yr old daughter and I will be sailing on Grandeur on 1/27/01 for the 3rd time. We love her and can't wait to set sail again with the new itinerary. Any changes on the Grandeur since Christmas '99?
