I am a former smoker and here I am. I am now going to be a rabid anti-smoking fan and I will report each and every person I see trying to sneak a smoke or an e-cig whenever I see them.
I so sorry for your loss! When I was young my neighbor had lung cancer and I watched her slip away over the course of a few years. Watching her gasp for breathe and use oxygen scared the crap out of me! God sent me a message loud and clear. I have never smoked and never will. A guy I worked with died of lung cancer at 72. He never drank or smoked but his wife did. Life can be so unfair! Felix my heart goes out to you.

The Paradise is not a non-smoking ship once again - hasn't been since 2003 and from what my Carnival rep told me, there are no plans to try this experiment again, at least not in the foreseeable future.

As much as non-smokers say they want an all non-smoking ship, it's just financial feasible, so I don't anyone will try it again anytime soon.

Smoking is banned in all public spaces in the UK and Ships should have this like the airports. Normally you get one bar that is smoking aloud and that is it. There are more and more people wanting smoking banned that those shouting for it (well, when smokers start shouting it is normally followed by coughing). I smoked from a young age and have finally been clean for 8 years. So I know how it feels on both sides, but as smokers are getting pushed outside and it's being shunned upon by more then we will see more spaces becoming non smoking until they are put in a lifeboat and towed behind the ship.

Last year smoking was allowed on one of the outside decks and in the casino on Enchantment. Has that changed?

There is no smoking allowed on balconies as of Jan 1/14. There is a smoking area on the outside deck although I can't remember exactly where. The Casino allows smoking.

Just back from the Independence of the Seas and while I missed smoking on my balcony, it really wasn't too big of a problem. Deck 4 was the best place to smoke, there was also smoking in the Casino, the Conesouers club and on the pool deck.

Just to be clear - the original post for this thread was from 2001 - 13 years ago.

I am pretty sure all the cruise lines have changed their policies towards smoking since then.

For the record - smoking on balconies is not so much a matter of politeness as it is a safety matter. When people try to throw lit cigartettes off of a balcony, or drop a cigarette - there is a VERY good chance the lit ember will blow back onto a different balcony.

This is how the famous Star Princess fire started, one of the worst cruise ship fires in modern history. It is actually much safer to set aside a place inside for smokers than to have them out in the wind.

Also - I remember when all of the Renaissance R-ships were non-smoking, but when you walked past the door for the crew quarters you could small smoke wafting out - even when the door was closed.

A lot of crew members break the rules and smoke on the rope decks - lower decks in the aft. That is probably why they catch on fire. Of course, they always blame a workman with a blowtorch.

I remember that well. As a smoker it would drive me nuts to walk by a crew door and smell the smoke. The non-smoking policy only applied to guests and crew in public areas. The non-smoking policy did not apply to crew, in crew areas.

Take care,
Mike
